It's interesting that as my system is in its last incarnation here at the current house, it sounds as good as it's ever been of late. I've been playing a lot of vinyl these last few evenings and some treasured 12" singles and they continue to wow me. Lots of comments from the family such as "I didn't know this was a record" and "that sounds really good". Music to my ears

Well, 45 rpm vs 33rpm - it's not a subtle difference! All those 33rpm LPs in our collections with substandard sound.

Music to my ears I always appreciate it when you get those sort of comments back from friends and family. I also like the one where you have an 'non-believer' who thinks Hifi is a waist of time and money and you play them something they know well and they sit there opened mouthed, I had this experience playing 'Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon' to a work colleague a few years ago and it was so rewarding

Another good reaction I enjoy is when an experienced audiophile peers behind the gear I had been demonstrating to check that the cheap bit of electronics really was connected up and making such excellent sounds. That's happened quite a few times.

It's almost time to pack up the system. I'm glad I kept all the boxes (especially the speaker ones) so I shall have a final couple of listens this weekend.

I keep every box I have. Buying 2nd hand with no boxes can be a pain. Leave the system until last. Unpack it frst ! The rest can be fitted in

I remember when we moved to the States many moons ago. When I set up my system there it sounded soooo different, or maybe I should say crap. It's amazing how we build our systems over the years to suit and sound good in the rooms we have. Take the system out of that room and you could be a wee bit stuffed. Hope it goes well, and your system sounds great.

Hope it goes well, and your system sounds great. I got that in Cyprus. Utterly crap sound.......just too many reflections and impossibly high ceilings don't help (although I love the sense of space). Too hot to use headphones too and no room for my Spicas. I brought more acoustic panels than I thought I'd ever need. Too many to put in the room without making it look like a recording studio. They do make a difference, but not enough to get beyond barely listenable. I'm not missing the music right now so it's no big issue. Having had so many different homes in the UK I've encountered some shockers and a couple of gems. You can never quite tell in advance but one or two things have struck me. Lower ceilings have generally been a bonus, as have irregular room shapes. Unfortunately I've hated such rooms aesthetically and I have craved order and space. The more regular-shaped rooms with higher ceilings have always been worse though. Martin's slightly low ceiling may just turn out to be a great listening room asset. I'd be amazed if his system sounded the same though. I've never found that. It got to the point where I'd sell my hifi before moving and start again in the new room. Can't see Martin doing that though

I've moved a few times, and yes, the initial swich-on is usually a bit dismaying. But I could almost always get it to work well after a bit of fooling around. The only exception was my lovely AvantGarde Uno horn hybrids - I went from a 16x19 foot room to 12x15. No way could I get that to work. Still, I enjoyed the subsequent speaker swapping adventure.

Good luck Martin.
As you know I really only had issues with the below 90Hz stuff in the new place. Above that frequency sounds remarkably similar.

Yes, I'm certainly anticipating some adjusting issues and the possibility that the room doesn't work well to start with. We shall have to see. I'm hoping for better bass with less overloading, though.

The biggest problem I had moving here I eventually discovered was the mains. Unswitched socket into cheap 4 way adaptors. Very poor earth as well. I'm sure our Martin has that covered !

Yes I moved into a flat we refurbed, but the mains were still about 40 years old. My hifi sounded horrific. My wife said she could literally see my face drop

I barely listened to music for about 18 months before we had a sparky in to fix other problems. I already *knew* this and still didn't fix it - Muppet

My two "best" listening rooms were in newly re-wired homes, I'd never made that connection until now.
I've sorted the biggest reflective problem in this room. Another obvious factor I was blind to: the tiled floor. It's too hot to have a rug down all the time but for listening it isn't to much of a faff. In Winter it may be OK to leave down.
