System rack now fully rebuilt. I've put the Pass power supply on an old Roksan support that I had forgotten I had, to the left of the main rack. I removed the bottom spikes and put threaded RDC2 Cones in their place, with the PSU itself on Black Ravioli. The main rack is on RDC1 Cones with each component on Black Ravioli except for the turntable, which is on sorbothane pucks. The SACD player and turntable are on Electric Beach S1NX shelves. Warms the cockles of my heart to see the S1NX still in there amongst such illustrious company Martin. That's a rack full of lovelyness! It strikes me that room treatment has similarities with the requirements for lining speaker cabinets, balancing reflective and less-reflective surfaces. A Yin and Yang exercise where you can have too much of a good thing in either direction. I'm not surprised therefore that changing from a carpeted floor benefits from more soft furnishings - an idea I've never known a woman be disinterested in! Maybe I should replace the foam in my speaker packaging with half a dozen cushions to sweeten their introduction...

The S1NX are staying right there, Steve. They make a significant difference compared with the source components placed directly on the rack, showing how sensitive they are to their support. Great performance and look nice, too. What's not to like?

S1NX still working for me too. I have photos when I can get them loaded Didn't use them for a while on the Creaktiv racks as assumed they would not work - but they do !

Listening to a whole variety of music last night, I realised that virtually everything (CDs and LPs) sounds better: easier to listen to, more detail, the perception of flow and the lack of harshness. And yet, the differences between good and bad recordings are more stark. Even so, it's easier to 'hear through' a dodgy recording rather than reel back in discomfort.
Some discs are revealed in even greater glory: for instance, Ry Cooder's Chavez Ravine displays subterranean bass that I had barely suspected was there before, as well as a fantastically large soundstage and wonderful centre stage vocals.
Another example: Roger Waters' Radio KAOS is recorded pretty hot, but even so it's possible to adjust to the brightness and still hear far more into the recording than before, with subtleties of Waters' bass playing more obvious.

Really good to hear that the new space has really helped take the system further Will it do that crazy Lenni Kalle track now allowing the detail to come through

I'll give it a try tonight, John. Standby for local tremors...!

Good news Martin, it is extremely satisfying to be able to get substantially more from your system for not much outlay if anything. Really pleased for you

...well, apart from the considerable outlay on the house, but I know what you mean!
I admit to being very pleased with it, it has exceeded my expectations in terms of an upgrade to my music. Shows once again that a room can make or break a system.

Yes I did think of the cost of the house, but hopefully your not such an audio file that the only reason for the house move was for better sound, or maybe it was...ooops 🙈🙈

Leads us into a whole realm of rooms, sizes, construction etc
Can you list what you think are the fundamental differences ? Bigger for sure. ...

I think there are two fundamental differences, though I could well be wrong:
- larger volume of air and greater distance from walls for speakers and listener - Speakers decoupled from hard floor with rubber feet, rather than hard coupled to carpeted floor with spikes

So there's 3 for a start. Mains might be doing something
The difference using the (decoupling) Townshend stands under the Montans was staggering. Tighter, more precise, accurate, right

Yes, I've had to about-face my opinions on spikes versus decoupling for speakers. There's no doubt that decoupling has worked very well for me.

Did you have a timber suspended floor in both properties? I always find that makes a difference. You can have all the coupling cones and spikes you like but if your floor vibrates then that energy is greater than the energy of your system and your system will be overtaken by it surely (1976Sovereigns third law)

What have you used on the speakers Martin ? Sorry if I missed this . I must admit that I've really enjoyed this thread so far . It's really interesting how a change like a room can affect a system so profoundly . Really pleased for you too . It's great when a plan comes together

Sovereign James, the floor was concrete but it was suspended or created over air cells as it had a tendency to bounce and I could cause large thumps by jumping on the floor. So in a way, it behaved like a suspended floor. I used the big Usher floor cones/spikes. The current one is tiles over concrete and is quite solid. With the rubber feet, bass quality is consequently much better - more extended and less boomy. I guess your third floor law is upheld! brian2957 Brian, I am using, believe it or not, Lidl washing machine feet under the Ushers to decouple them from the floor. I hope to try some Black Ravioli under them when TonyC can find some more loan ones. I remain amazed at how well this room is doing. It's not perfect, but it's a whole lot better than the old one.

From memory my rooms always sounded worse until we moved into the extended garage here for a few months. That was dead good. System in the new build part. Floor quite likely like your old house. When we moved back into the main house after refurb a definite step down, which I think we have now overcome with many upgrades Has crossed my mind more than once to move the system back there...
