In my youth I was quite a crumpet fancier. Oh yes. . . Well remember the days I toasted them on me Gran's open fire and trying to avoid the smoke plumes from the coal. Later in adult life though, my allegiance switched to the muffin. The pull of a cheese one was just too much. Haven't had any for years sadly, having make do with the standard type.

Crumpet.
Personal preferences have nothing to do with this. It's an established scientific fact that messy and unhealthy foods are always nicer (100% of scientists agree with this - even the ones who can't be paid off by the Crumpet Marketing Board). The humble crumpet has the capacity to absorb huge quantities of butter (and jam, if you like it), within its capacious pores. Small quantities of this will then ooze out from below said crumpo, running down your fingers and dripping on your clothes. The oozage is not fast enough to make you feel the need to take the necessary effective countermeasures in time. After all, who would eat a simple crumpet with a knife and fork, other than the most up-tight graduates of a Swiss Finishing School? Despite the oozage the crumpo still hold enough unhealthy comestibles to retain their heart disease inducing properties.
Messy and unhealthy, I rest my case. I mean, whoever heard of anyone dying of a muffin related heart attack? And the most mess you can make with a muffin is one or two crumbs on the carpet, which is a pretty poor show, I reckon. I think there may even be a sub clause in Murphy's Rulebook that renders muffins exempt from the 'butter side down' law of gravity!

I've yet to try the Warburtons "giant" crumpets, but Chris B's evocation has made my lips tremble in anticipation.

Really don't like Warburton's crumpets. To me they have a raw taste - even when I burn the guts out of them. I get Asda's an odd time - which are probably a low spec Warburton's.
But oh for the joys of a toasted golden brown cheesey muffin with lashings of Lurpack. Oh yes...

Crumpet, no competition. Lashings of butter, topped with jam, or Marmite and occasionally butter and sugar like my gran used to have

I'll vote for Marmite too, good and thick. Crunchy peanut butter is probably my favourite on Crumpets though. For Muffins (especially the Sainsbury's Cheddar and black pepper muffins I recommended above) a nice dollop of Camenbert, or even better, Pié d'Angloys if you have it is delicious.

No local Sainsbury's. So I'll have to search one out.

I'll vote for Marmite too, good and thick. Ooo no, I find Marmite far too much if it is thick, has to be a smidge with lots of butter when I have it on toast.
