Low bass has a great deal of energy, with all respect stuffing something into a port really will not make the slightest difference certainly to sub 80Hz bass which is omnidirectional. Keith

As well as room issues I think the cabinet adds both good and bad aspects to the sound of a system

Standing waves are purely due to the room's dimensions, doesn't matter if the speakers have a cabinet or not. Keith

I have heard the same drivers with baffles and without and the difference was pretty noticeable in terms of SQ. Due to this I moved to a very minimal baffle approach and have no regrets, it certainly isn't pretty but with my friends system it removed a lot of room modes he always had issues with no matter what speakers he put in. Speakers have a dynamic interaction with a room This can be either a positive force or negative force. I am all in favour myself of DSP with Bass but I do not go crazy with it ( I am using a FAST approach Full-range Assisted Subwoofer Technology) just a bit of boast around 200 and some a bit lower too for a bit more oomph as the drivers ae starting to drop off. I am not using the peak at 200 to overcome room issues more to fill a bit of a gap that my PRV 5MR450 leave so it integrates well I am sure most people would not like the sound as it is extremely fast with lots of scale, clout and detail. I think for most people it be a bit over the top. Having DSP I could easily dial in a more sedate sound with less impact. It gives you that versatility I am certainly off the believe in keeping the signal on the PRV as clean as I can get it (no DSP here for me, although Steve uses DSP well here to time align and control crossover )

The box can colour the sound of course by storing energy leading to resonance ,but standing waves are purely the result of your room's dimensions , so it doesn't matter if you have a baffle or not, you could confirm any difference by measurement. Keith

Keith With all respect I've done it and have the plots to prove it, not to mention that the bass is lighter and tighter now. My room node is around 40Hz, not in the very deep bass.

John's experience and our joint friend I know is that rooms mode issues are reduced with FAST baffless vs OB. In my case I have more severe room modes due to an almost square room with a low ceiling; in my case I need use the same DSP settings for box, OB and FAST baffless. Baffles get in the way, the sound is so clean without them.

If you have less bass energy injected into the room then the amplitude of modes will be reduced ,I suspect that your open baffles without the reinforcement from an enclosure are simply producing less bass. Keith

The OBs and baffless measure flat to 25hz with good extension below that. With cancellation effects the sheer movement of air with the baffless in particular is quite something to experience. The two 15" drivers per channel are running an 800W amp hard.

Baffles get in the way, the sound is so clean without them. Yes this is why I moved away from baffles I would also say the sense of the sheer energy of the music is also improved

What are fast baffles?

FAST stands for Full-range Assisted Subwoofer Technology. It's a rather contrived term. Essentially it's a full range driver or at least Wideband supported by (often) active bass.

oh, so someone has put a name to it. We used to call it a bass helper. I think I'll stick to that. Especially not many of my friends can manage without a super tweeter these days, unlike in the method's origins.

Super tweeters are by no means excluded. The FAST term is not one I like, I'd rather say full range speakers including a wideband driver but there's no natty acronym for that. Yes I too have run speakers like this for years.
