Cheers, both. Unfortunately, BT equalised their pricing for broadband and Infinity so I have no leverage there. I've been pretty heavy with them but each individual I've spoken to has tried to help. It's the organisation that's immovable, with set processes that they cannot break out of, such as the necessity to perform an online check before they can call an engineer out. The fact that mine checks out as 'indeterminate' rather than just fails leaves them stuck in their own system, unable to progress things. It's maddening for them and for me.

Oh dear. That's the one we have. Does anyone know if these supplied routers only work on the network they were supplied for? It is the supplier hard coded in firmware? I'd prefer to use the EE router still on the Sky network we now have as it's a bit more powerful. I did try to make a talktalk router work on EE once but gave up. Piggy backing them via LAN is no problem regardless of make. The sky ones only have two LAN sockets though ((( Get into the admin on the Sky supplied router and copy the login credentials. Then get into the admin on your EE supplied router and enter the Sky login credentials. There's no reason why your EE supplied kit won't work with the Sky login credentials. That's cool. I did have a go but last year but could not get it to fly. Might give it another go..

Good news. The Openreach guy turned up today, traced the phone incoming line to a master socket we didn't know we had (no markings), and installed a shiny new Openreach master socket in the kitchen where our Smart Hub is. Voice quality is better and the Infinity speed has jumped to 18 Meg. Now, that's hardly the 'guaranteed minimum' of 43 Meg but, frankly, the engineer and I doubt that it's possible to get much more since the house is about 1.5km from the cabinet.
I think it's best to settle for 18 Meg as about the best we're going to get. I'll watch it settle over the next few days.

In fact, this confirms that 1.5km should yield about 20 Meg so we're about right.

Am I right in assuming this is a fibre connection? I am getting 17.7 on standard broadband. In an urban area (Bristol).

This is FTTC Infinity. Standard broadband gave me about 5 Meg.

FTTC has always been touted as "the last quarter mile", so for the best part of a mile 18Meg isn't bad. That's a result.
The cabling anomaly thing is not a surprise - householders would rather cobble any old shite together, rather than get someone who actually does know what they're doing. I don't do much private domestic work for that very reason. The odd bits that I have done have always been for business owners, and they're always surprised to find that things run quicker, and are a lot more reliable.

Update from what was the slowest.
Put in the new Plusnet 1 box, replacing the previous 2 boxes. Seemed faster ..... ?
Checked on Speedtest. Previously 12Mb download, now 17. Delighted. That must be a coincidental speed increase from outside our house, surely not the new box ?

In case anyone is looking for a new Wi-Fi setup giving proper coverage around the house, I can wholeheartedly recommend the BT Whole Home system. I've got it up and running now and it works on mesh principles rather than just repeaters. This means all the discs work together to deliver a seamless roaming experience with a single SSID. In our large barn the three work together and I can roam around with a constant connection while they hand-off my client from one to the other. Very nice system.

Anyone on BT Internet be advised - If you currently have the legacy "BT Sport Lite" which is free you will shortly be paying for it unless you cancel it. There is NO easy way of doing this, it involves either a phone call or, as I did it, an online chat with an agent via their website. I also got £7.00 a month knocked off of my bill while I was at it. [EDIT] I've just realised, their clock is telling the wrong time. It's an hour slow. BT - Living In The Past

It must seem like it's moving at the speed of excrement being propelled from the buffed blade of a manual excavation implement. I ran a length of Cat 6 for the new computer, and got exactly the same speed as I was getting via wireless.

That it does!! The Cat 6 may appear to run at only the same speed as wi-fi, but it should have less latency and lag.

For me it's not so much the absolute speed, but the extreme variability.
I just ran the "windows network speed test" at 10:00 a.m. and it returned 21.81 Mbps. I ran it again at 10:02 and it now reads 36.50
There's nothing else running on my home network to account for the difference.

We had a few dropouts recently. Hopefully that was them ramping up the speed not a flakey line.
