Well the day of the switch came. Broadband connection dropped out at 16:30. I unplugged my lan linked / remote Talktalk router, plugged in the Sky router and held my breath. Within short up it all came. Devices configured. All seems the same. There's just the two of us most of the time so huge bandwidth is not necessary. After a simple fiddle in the Sky router settings and a change to IP start address in the Talktalk router all is up and running and we have WiFi across the whole width of the property again. Most important so I can use Gizmo to remote control Jriver when I want to play tunes in the music loft..
It's not necessarily big MB/s numbers you need. A stable connection and say 15 or 20Meg download with low ping is quite sufficient for streaming etc I have found. Having a big number is nice though esp if there are a lot of you doing stuff concurrently of course.

Yes, I'm looking forward to both the bandwidth and the Smart Hub. Well, we got the Hub at least which has improved wi-fi coverage. Unfortunately activation date came and went. It transpires that Openreach have to lay new fibre to the cabinet as the original run has a fault in it. This has delayed things by a week - so they say. I expect it to be longer. Meanwhile, the full fury of our 5Mbps broadband feels like a slight draft on the cheek.

The story rolls on. It took a while for Openreach through BT to acknowledge that the re-cabling of the cabinet had been completed. Yesterday I finally got through to 'Sid' (the case handlers have changed, the messages remained the same) who agreed with me that the order had not gone well. He promised to 'have a word' and call me back later. Then I got an e-mail thanking me for my order and saying that activation would be on 22 September! I had almost given up on getting the call back when Sid phoned and told me that he had organised for Openreach to activate me today.
I'll believe it when I get home tonight, but at least it sounds more promising.

The good news: activation did happen and we are now on Infinity.
The bad news: it's peaking at around 9 Meg. I'm not entirely wowed considering the guaranteed minimum on their website is 45 Meg.
More bloody phone calls tomorrow.

We now have a new (bigger) cabinet in the village, and since about 2 weeks after I get about 10 -12 mbps on my connection.
That's good for me, although (as far as I know) I'm not on infinity.

I'm on Infinity II and the green BT cabinet is directly opposite my house!
I did a speed test this morning which stated that I am getting 79.7 mbps download speed!
No mention of upload speed with the BT test I used.

I had a very lengthy conversation with BT last night at which point they told me there is a 10-day settling period for the speed to find its level. So I asked them if they expected the current speed (which has now dropped to 6 Meg) to suddenly increase to their stated minimum of 43 Meg. They then corrected me and said the minimum should be 47 Meg!!!!
So the 10-day period translates as "time available to cook up another pathetic excuse before we have to send someone round".

So it is burn-in then! Perhaps the cable is directional and they've got it the wrong way round too? Have you got a Flux Dumper on your router yet?

There is a bit of learning in the signalling and link protocols but it will never go from 6 to 47. I'll eat my hat if it does due to settling in. We had a little less stability a couple of times during our 14 day initial period. Some dips in speed too by a couple of meg here or there. Then it was at what they promised, nice and stable. I think you have a few more painful calls yet

Our Sky Q router has just given up the ghost. Only a few months old. Doesn't really inspire confidence..

Our Sky Q router has just given up the ghost. Only a few months old. Doesn't really inspire confidence.. Oh dear. That's the one we have. Does anyone know if these supplied routers only work on the network they were supplied for? It is the supplier hard coded in firmware? I'd prefer to use the EE router still on the Sky network we now have as it's a bit more powerful. I did try to make a talktalk router work on EE once but gave up. Piggy backing them via LAN is no problem regardless of make. The sky ones only have two LAN sockets though (((

Then get into the admin on your EE supplied router and enter the Sky login credentials. There's no reason why your EE supplied kit won't work with the Sky login credentials.

Only an optical out on the box too. Very disappointing.

I've been quite pleased with Virgin Media so far, no phone line just Broadband.
Just did a ping test - 195.10 MB/s download and 14.50 MB/s upload.
