Sky HD box downloading works fine as it's not real time. Planning ahead helps.

I downgraded from BT fibre to EE standard broadband as I didn't need the extra speed and was desperate to leave BT, whose customer service was astoundingly shite. Unfortunately, BT then bought EE so technically I am back with the cretins. Once my year is up I'm going to have few choices if I don't like BT since they now own PlusNet and EE. The only options seem to be Virgin, Vodafone or Sky, all of which are too expensive for me.
Is there anybody else who supplies cheap broadband?
I might try using my 4G phone as a hotspot and get rid of the landline altogether since all the landline calls are spammers trying to con me.

I've just checked the Infinity checker once again, and suddenly things are moving! My exchange is at 'Field Survey' status with the statement 'you're scheduled to be upgraded' within the next nine months. This is good news. Options will be FTTC, FTTP and FOD.

Who delivered your EE service before BT bought them? BT, of course. The EE element was solely down to third party wholesale agreements. With respect to alternate suppliers, have you thought of Talk Talk? When a friend went with them a few years ago they did a cease and reprovide with his land line, and the broadband service is delivered over that. He's fairly happy with their service. The only issue he's had with them was when the phone side of things ceased working - it was a short on the circuit, which didn't stop his broadband service, but did cause issues with the phone. Talk Talk sorted out the problem relatively quickly, and my friend managed to negotiate perpetual free calls to mobiles from his land line as compensation. The cease and reprovide is the interesting bit - most folk switch provider because of issues with service, and with the a cease and reprovide there is a physical change of circuit over which the service is delivered. The circuit is new at the BT exchange, and the delivery pair is a different pair at the nearest roadside cabinet, which means that the only bit of the old circuit used is the last few hundred metres, and the majority of faults occur before this last link.

The security breach at TalkTalk worried me, but I'll certainly think about them when it's time to change. Didn't they used to have awful customer service?

Talk talk have a bad rep.
Of interest in general Check your cabling and master socket If you have more than one this will be of interest.
A BT Openreahc engineer who would not give up seems to have found our problem
We have multiple sockets. Master sockets were not around when we had the various sockets installed.
When we had broadbaand the engineer chose our master socket, possibly with our agreement.
This was not the master socket. Latest and best engineer found the first contact socket and made that the master. Speeds up from a normal 2.5mb to 12mb and it has stayed up for a week now.
