Can't you get a good deal on 4G broadband and ditch the landline all together. We never use our fixed phone... Before the broadband was up and running we had a deal on a EE 4G router / WiFi. The WiFi part was only good for a small flat but it was very portable and a lot faster than 6M. Perhaps they do beefier versions nowadays?

I'm still researching. Thing is, I want FTTC ultimately so a land line service still has an advantage. However, EE have good coverage (so they say)...

Interesting! We got 4G down here on EE with it in the window. Would be great if they could have an external aerial. Marie and I are on VFE and get 1 bar in the house (all the Celotex I guess ), with our Windows phones they work perfectly on one bar and we get H+ but of course use the WiFi for data when at home. One daughter has an iphone on VFE as well - absolutely no coverage in the house! Ditto with other daughters Haewei! You get the RF you deserve with these phones where telephony is rather an afterthought. I hope MS have the good sense to that aspect of the Nokia capability, otherwise there will be one less redeeming feature..
I wonder if the Sony phones today are as good as Sony-Ericsson / Ericsson were?

Our daughter has an iPhone 6 and the battery life is truly appalling, but then I did warn her not to get one. As if she'd listen!

Just an update - the BT Home Hub 5 is doing a great job with the measly 5Mbps ADSL, things seem to have settled down with no drop-outs and steady speeds. Two TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders help to get coverage throughout the house quite seamlessly (they broadcast the same SSID as the base hub). I may add a third and then that's the networking done.

I live out in the sticks and use a Billion router - quite expensive (£175 I seem to remember) but it has the great advantage that you can modify (if I remember correctly) the minimum required signal to noise ratio for the link between the router and the exchange equipment. This enabled me to more than double my download speeds (to around 6Mbps) vs the BT router.
Do a search on Google, there's quite a bit of info on them. I've been very happy with it, and recently picked up a second hand older version (£20) from someone moving to fibre.

The BT Home Hub 5 is a pretty good router as they go, decent specs, fast and with a relatively simple interface. It auto channel hops to find the clearest wi-fi channel, too. You really need to troubleshoot to the root of the problem, Mike. Is it the phone line, the broadband provision, the wi-fi? Each has different problems and solutions. if you have more than one issue, systematic troubleshooting is the only way you're going to resolve them all.

The other trick is to ask BT to increase the gain on the line. They don't like doing it but if you can persuade them then it gives a little faster speeds and (more importantly) reduces drop-outs.

I don't know without a better understanding of your ISP. I still feel like you're scouting for a cheap 'fix' without getting to the root of what is causing your problems. It may well be that your line itself is the issue, in which case you need to get the line (voice) provider to sort it first. Then look at the broadband provider (broadband sits on top of the voice circuit). Finally, look at the router and/or the wi-fi provision.
I may have asked you this before: you do have a microfilter on every telephone on the circuit (and the router), separating out voice from broadband? If not, every phone call will disrupt the broadband.

Plusnet, owned by BT but run separately, does phone and broadband.
When I have problems it is usually only my PC so therefore down to me. Since going wireless it has been much better (cross fingers) Rarely we have a problem that causes all to go slow. This is intermittent. All working and plugged in phones have filters.
Previously had BT Openreach out and they found water in a junction box outside. Since fixed

Ok, in that case leave the router alone unless you get more widespread problems.
Bring your PC fully up to date with all Windows and AV updates. Upgrade the wi-fi driver to the latest version and see if you achieve stability.

As my hub has re-trained and settled down, my download speed has improved if not upload speed. Ignore the high ping time, caused by my testing across a Wi-Fi extender.
