Unswitched sockets sound better than switched.
I 'switched' to a Missing Link a few years ago from a standard MK. Yes, nice little difference, worth the £30 odd
Mentioned this to Tony who is delving into my system currently and he brought along his own socket.
Useful that I have 2 right next to each other so listened. Missing Link first - normal for me, good sound
Coherent next Surely not possible ? Everything is better, treble, midrange, bass, clarity
This is a major system upgrade.
Cost ? Around £100 from your favourite TAS member called Fluxed in Time
Value for money ? Yes. Take my word for it and get one quick

I've been using a Missing Link silvered double socket for a number of years now.

That's the one I was using.
The improvement to the Coherent was a big step up

Sorry Brian, no.
It's Tony's stealth marketing. Not on his web site

A bit of perspective: That's a strong statement Mike. I'd think it would surprise many, me included. I'm trying to understand the magnitude of the improvement that you have achieved. You've been listening to new speakers, which you like a lot. Now, if that change were to score 100% on a scale of improvement, where would the socket come?

If the change was as great as suggested I'd be wondering if something in the other socket was broken. A simple blind A-B test usually sorts differences out for me.

Took me by surprise.
I've been listening to all sorts of changes in the system. Top was the change from the jumper cables. Next was that socket. Less significant were changes to Pre Amp and power Amps as well as various cables
More sets of ears will be hear on Saturday to confirm or not.

Sorry we were stretching and testing the new system and didn't get around to comparing sockets !

Saturday was good and we didn't need to hear the sockets, it was the TAD speakers that gave you a major uplift in sound quality. Jules and I could both hear that very clearly, excellent sound in keeping with the more expensive TAD Compact References. Jules thought that they lacked a little warmth whereas the balance suited my preference, just goes to show how personal a system's balance of strengths can be. At some future point (after my move) I'll give the Belles preamp a listen. The jury's out for me as the Pass has always been excellent. My Pass isn't like yours anyway, remember I have the Revelation Audio silver power link cable. This needs to go in your blog, by the way

Further mitigation for not checking out the socket. Tony had only just left after swapping out the Quadral Montans for the TADs so even I hadn't heard them do much. They are rather good, just the price gives me the heebie geebies

I'm not looking for anyone to reveal trade secrets, but does the socket have any extra gizmos or is it configured differently to a normal socket? I'm curious to know if the differences are simply down to better construction and materials, or is there more to it?

No extra gizmo's or quantum rearranging, just a very well constructed unit with exceptionally good surface contact area plus a solid grip of the plug. Three times industry standard of plating of Coherrent proprietory metaurgical material finished off with a cryogenic 72 hour treatment

So construction is the reason Mike found This is a major system upgrade.
I am jealous as I have never heard a major system upgrade from changing a minor part of my system. A few minor ones and none. Major was changing the speakers and amp

I found the PS Audio P10 to make a major system upgrade and wouldn't be without regeneration - power is important. My Missing Link silver socket made a minor upgrade. I couldn't comment on the Coherent as I haven't heard its effect.

Different items have different effects. The existing system allows some and doesn't let other improvements through. Kit is what we expect to be a big one. Accessories still take me by surprise when they have this sort of effect
This socket was a big lift. I think it's the unobtanium used in the construction !
Another surprise is that anything can make a big difference as I assumed I was getting near the performance ceiling
