We get a rumble of performance complaints about TAS from time to time. They mostly fall into the areas of slowness and/or pages freezing. Here is a summary of the things that I know of, some of which you can change and some of which are out of our direct control because we are hosted, for free, by ProBoards.
Oh, and occasionally ProBoards has a real problem and we will report it to their support staff, who are pretty quick to respond.
If anyone else has any ideas for performance improvements, please feel free to contribute.
- Browsers vary by speed: check which browser you are using. By far the two fastest are Chrome (all platforms) and Edge (Windows 10)
- Your hardware may be deficient. RAM is worth more speed than CPU. You should be using more than the vendor minimum specs for your OS since they always claim it can 'run' in very little memory. 'Run' is not the same as 'Run well' and RAM is inexpensive for desktops and laptops. There is little you can do for tablets and phones in this area, and they tend to be slower in all respects anyway.
- Your OS may be old. The latest Windows, iOS, Mac OSX or Android will generally perform better than older versions. Remember that Windows XP is obsolete and Windows Vista support will expire next year. Macs should be updated to El Capitan and should not be older than Mountain Lion. The iPad 1 is out of iOS support. Android is very vendor dependent but, if possible, should be upgraded to Marshmallow (v6) or Lollipop (v5)
- Threads which are heavy on photos, YouTube posts and Spotify posts tend to render more slowly and can appear to freeze while the 'out of sight' posts are also being rendered
- ProBoards now features video ads as well as banner/footer ads and, while they claim they are small in size, do make a difference to page rendering speed
- The most important impact on page speed is your internet connection. Infinity or cable is best while broadband and 3G/4G are much more prone to lag and contention with other users. Hopefully you're not on dial-up!
- Try the ProBoards apps (iOS / Android) or Tapatalk (all platforms), which are small and efficient, especially good on phones and tablets
- You could try using an ad-blocker. Since TAS is advert funded, however, we are honour-bound not to recommend this practice
- Check that you are using an efficient anti-virus package, use only one and keep it up to date. This should be obvious but I still come across machines with no AV. I recommend (from support experience) Defender for Windows 10, Microsoft Security Essentials for older Windows and Sophos Free AV for MacOS. Perform an occasional full scan as any trojans or other malware can eat your internet bandwidth and slow down your machine
- TAS forum plug-ins can consume processing and memory and we are careful to use only useful ones, testing them first for any performance hit
