I noticed ChrisBs threads on Acoustic Research speakers then I saw this for sale for £100. After a wee bit help I got it up and running in my downstairs system and it sounded great. Running the TV through it produced great results with speech being clear and delivery crisp. A couple of tunes through the SS176s sounded good as well. Not anywhere near as warm as the Arcam duo with a crisper sound but very good depth and soundstage. This was from an idevice and Bluetooth. Took it upstairs this morning and hooked up to the AN Ks in a smaller room and it's thunderous. Deep, deep bass, crisp sharp treble and speed by the bucketload. Sonnentanz is delivered with real power and authority,Getting away with it just sounds immaculate with great detail, Other side of the world just sounds superb as does Rocketman. Compared with my valves I'd say it loses a tiny bit on the emotions but not by much and it does make me want to just keep listening. All in all for £100 I don't think you can do much better and I'm delighted.

What's the speaker cable? The AR may work better with a minimum 2.5mm copper stranded cable (Van Damme, Fisual and the normal/usual price equivalent to the silly money Linn K10, which I remember being a very good speaker cable).

Really good news Chris. I thought it might be a good match with your Audio Note speakers. That range of gear is a massive bargain for the prices they are fetching at the moment, but you managed to snag one of the rare ones for an amazingly small amount. Well done you!

It's my own super duper speaker cable dsjr - there's plenty details about it on other threads. I've also got some Supra 4mm,StudioSpares own make and a couple of others. I've a feeling the Supra will work well but I'm away offshore tonight so don't have the time to faff around with it. I will when I come back and report in full. Many thanks for the kind comments as well gents.

Supra copper used to not be very good if my own speaker and signal cables of old are anything to go by, looking dirty and tarnished down its length. One cable I do like but you have to buy a 100m drum from a supplier or from NVA I believe is the 2.5mm 7 strand copper instrument cable known to me as 'LS2.' I don't know what the insulation is, but it seems to be a black coated grey jacket material, the copper is bright and shiny and boy, does it kick ass over the Cable Talk Excel 4 (2.5mm 42 strand copper in a fancy jacket from BICC). I love it!

Sounds great! My adventures with speaker cables are now over though as the super duper stuff is perfect for me,in my systems. It's cheap, sounds good and is easy to work with. Can I not tempt you to try it?

Send me a couple of 8m lengths and I'd love to Edit - it looks suspiciously like Chord Rumour or Odyssey, even down to the stripe on the jacket? If so,been there and done it twenty more years ago Edit Edit - it almost certainly is related to the Chord Co. stuff, which cost five to ten times more It works really with some gear, but scrappy as hell with others if I have it right, the more transparent and powerful the system, the scrappier it got in my experience, possibly because the cross section isn't very large, hence my suggestion for copper stranded able in this instance that would be an interesting comparison....

If the wam is to be believed, it's the same as Epic Twin, only this is doubled up (which add so much extra weight and presence). If Doc Stewart is correct, it's exactly the same as Silver Sounds speaker cable. IIRC LS2 is 2.5mm H07V-R cable, sometimes listed as 6491 cable. Sure, it's cheap to buy a reel, but who on earth would want to DIY when NVA cuts it to length, terminates it and posts it free. It's a real bargain and it doesn't get the credit it deserves because of its low price. Having tried it in a wide range of systems it's very good indeed. For me it beats all of the copper dumb-bell cables inc k20 and NAC-A5 (isn't the latter something like £25-30 a metre these days?). It doesn't beat Chris's cable though. Not even close and I've tried them both with a lot of kit. Looking back at the emails I had about Chris's cable, the details are: M22759/43-12-47 and the Nato Stock Number is 6145995476603

I always loved the look of those AR amps, Chris. Looking at them now, they were decades ahead of their time in terms of design. They actually look like a contemporary design. I wonder how much an amp of that spec would be today. Wouldn't be three figures I reckon.

Dsjr : 2x8 mtr lengths would be around £30. Complete bargain. I can do you a short run if you can move your amp but I strongly recommend hearing it - if you haven't already. Remember though you would be judging it at roughly 3x the price so not exactly a fair comparison. Yeah,Singularity,I also like the looks and it certainly seems very solidly built and modern. I think the power cable lets it down a bit - standard cable with a rather tatty plug but I might have someone open it up and replace that along with any caps etc that might need refreshed due to age. Turns out there's now a whole AR system has appeared as well albeit with a lesser amp.... www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/172157788599 Be interesting to see what this sells for... And yeah julesd68,I think it's a bargain. It'll get used every day(it's downstairs now so Mrs Chris uses it with the TV when I'm away) and I just don't think you'll get better for the money. Glad I posted here about it as ChrisB and Singularitys input was very helpful.

Thanks muchly indeed for the offer. The LS2 was offered and snatched up because I needed a cheap (free - cough) wire to use for the downstairs system that wouldn't fry NVA output stages into expensive speakers, one pair of which being practically impossible to repair now. I'm totally skint right now but will ask again when able. The cables have to be like this so I can tuck them under the carpet...

I'd agree MartinT. Judging by the listing it looks like the seller got their information from here. Like a bus eh....none for ages then two around the same time!
Wouldn't half mind that manual that's with it.....

Collect only from Liverpool. That may keep the price down.
