I'm going to need some speakers soon and have an Amptastic Mini-T amp, HRT DAC and JRiver on my computer. Needs to be small to go in a suitcase to fly and high sensitivity - I was thinking of some Q Acoustics 3020s, but anyone else have some other ideas?

Tim, I'd be looking at some small pro monitors given your brief. Something like that will be perhaps a little more robust for packing up and travelling with. Choosing a pair of active ones would do away with the amp too.

I run whaferdale diamond 9s in the garage with a temple bantum, sounds bloody marvelous with a wee sandisk player. Ive tried them with a mini t and they are fine. Richer sounds does them for forty quid-might be a bit bulky for a suitcase though!!!

How about a lower model from the q acoustics range? The concepts make a song and dance of using the stands which wouldn't apply so what about the 2020i or the 2010i?

Some good suggestions here. Richer Sounds are actually doing Comtrol 1s for £49 right now with a 6 year guarantee.

The Control 1 is a good solid, 'steady away' kind of speaker. It was actually my first thought as to Tim's best choice.

I use a classic pair of Wharfedale Diamond IV with my Mini-T amp and they work together really well. I got the speakers from fleabay for a very reasonable £30. Not sure how well they do travelling though to be honest

I bought my Diamond IV's last year from cash Converters for a tenner Could you *really* live with Control Ones? Tinny tweeter and squonky mids? Not sure I could in all honesty... There is an issue here - all small boxes need power to make them work properly and provide a little bit of bass - laws of physics not mere opinion - Diamond IV's have absolutely no bass extension and a whole bottom octave is missing in my experience, even with the Krell up their backsides. The Mini-T has absolutely NO power to speak of and soon gets harsh over a very few Watts, turning nasty and old CB Naim-like very quickly in my personal experience. So what to do? Staying with Diamonds, can you go a bit larger to Diamond 8.1's at least? Larger speakers are naturally more efficient and 86 - 87db is a minimum I think for one of these chip-amps if nasty tinny sounds at more than low volume is to be avoided. A chap on AOS used B&W DM2A's with one and liked it for a year or so, but caved in eventually. Sorry to be so negative - I'm really trying to help here.

Like I said - some little active pro monitors would be just the job.

Even with my efficient Fostex-based PC speakers, there is a point above which the T-Amp goes into distortion very quickly. Make sure that accompanying speakers are efficient, above all.

You can get Control Ones as active models.

Little actives can be huge fun, but getting a listen to a few might prove a problem. Studiospares have an interesting range and Thomann have a huge one online.

Tim is in China, so getting a chance to listen to anything is going to be tricky!

They will need to be purchased in the UK and brought here, so evaluation is pretty pointless. Whatever I buy is going to sound less than ideal in a room with tiled floors, no curtains and minimal soft furnishings. But I can't afford to be fussy and let's face it, anything is better than nothing and it's just a stop gap. I'll probably leave them here when I return too, so don't want to waste a lot of money.
I'll have some headphones and amp anyway for proper listening, so the speakers are more for company and for the iPlayer radio.

I haven't experienced this myself but I rarely listen at anything above low volumes so I guess I wouldn't have.
