I'm still using a nice XTPower 10000 which supplies 12V for the Caiman and 5V for the RPi, plugged into a timer for overnight charging. Works very well.

Possibly it's cheaper, but not have solar panels to recharge ;-) Regarding SQ, your whole audio chain must be able to do it having low noise floor. Battery does not have any ripple and rectifier spikes, so possibly will lower that noise floor mentioned and than increase S/N ratio. Than theoretically, you will hear more micro details/dynamics. That's the case on my side - very good blackened background and even small, micro details are now audible. It is not like nite and day, but better. Here is a photo, how it fits to the CMII design:

Thanks; that's very useful.
Do you keep it on charge all the time?

Better to use one of these and charge it only when you're not listening (I do mine overnight).

I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk but I can no longer find it. There is a German site that sells them the last time I looked.

Nope, tried my Beresfords fed by Ankar Astra Pro 2 and don't like it, especially when the battery power starts to degrade which causes the sound to soften and lose any acute presentation. In my view, battery is rubbish and there is good science to support this view, including the fact that battery supply may well introduce unwanted and unexpected noise. I currently use a Nick Gorham 'LongDog' linear PSU to feed both the Caiman II and the Capella which IMHO is a far better sound option. Take my advise or just work it out for yourself. Even Richard Dunn claims a battery supply is rubbish. I don't have any technical view on this, I have just decided what sounds best to me. Hell, does that mean I'm just like Marco? I hope not!

Well, I've also listened to Stan's original switched mode power supply, a highly smoothed and low noise Paul Hynes PR3i linear power supply and a 12V battery, and to my ears it was no contest with the battery winning easily. My ears, my kit, but I have equally no doubt!
