The KAV-250a has a good reputation, never heard one though.

The KAV-250a has a good reputation, never heard one though. See photo of mine in a previous post. A very fine amp, somewhat forward in its presentation but very transparent and controlled. I've had one twice!

The KAV-250a has a good reputation, never heard one though. I'm sure it'll find it's way back into my system at some point, was looking to get another one to try them bridged.

Ah - the watts from my previous Crown XLS1500 were definitely not Krell watts!

Here my favorite amps. These are the Genelec modified Yamaha NS1000M known as Genelec S45YA. Each NS1000 has a plate amp with three way active crossover and three amps. The amps are only nominal 50W each. The sound is pro-monitor. I can hear everything going on in a song. Here is a picture from my lounge. Then the amps. Upper right the active crossover. Lower left to right bass / mid / treble amps.

I've never heard of those Yamaha variants, Juha. Presumably they were sold into studios?

In the late seventies Yamaha was entering the pro monitor market. They sold NS1000M at very low prices to the public broadcasting companies.
Swedish Radio bought hundreds. They used a local monoblock amp Xelex (100 w) attached to the speaker. Finnish Public Broadcasting took a chance on a then small startup, Genelec (now turnover over £10m).
90 pairs of active NS1000 were made. They were used for monitoring at tv/radio studios. Later Finnish Broadcasting moved on to newer Genelecs. The active NS1000 were sold at equipment auctions.
The big question is which one is better. The original NS1000 with passive crossover or the Genelec modified active one??
Not many people outside Finland have heard the active ones. Finnish audiophiles tend to favor the original NS1000 with quality amplification. Broadcasting audio engineers prefer the Genelecs.

The Basic NS1000 were good to start with, my friend Mike ran his with Magnum A100 and they sound great and later with a SECA design. I have also heard them tri-amped and still damn good, nice kit Juha.

I think it fair to say that however good passive crossovers can be, they are still in the signal path and do funny things to the load as seen from the amplifier - and yes, I am well aware how careful the likes of Yamaha were back then and Harbeth today (no offence intended to those I have little experience of these days). A GOOD well designed active amp system is usually better, as the amps see a 'purer' load of narrow bandwidth, overall efficiency is increased (50W for these NS1000's would translate to 200W or more in the stock passive ones I reckon) and of course, the passive crossovers have drifted off spec as YNWOAN found when he cannibalised his pair and measured the crossovers, which did use then high quality parts I remember.

Now that's just showing off It's a seriously impressive collection and I've loved seeing it. But......why did you have to show that bloody blue Claymore I missed out on when I was 21? You've set me off wanting it all over again
