I saw McLaughlin/Mahavishnu at one of the Crystal Palace Garden Parties the year before this was released playing their Inner Mounting Flame album and with the same line-up as on Birds. He was all in white and playing his Gibson double-neck; talk about iconic. 7/10 from me, I still prefer Inner Mounting Flame.

The Inner Mounting Flame is superb. For me beaten by Birds of Fire Then there's Visions Emerald Beyond from the Mk2 band, another stunning album

I aacept that this maybe be a good LP for peeps that like jazzy/fusion but tbh it's my idea of a nightmare. My dislike for guitar being the contributing factor. A lot of bands like Brand X & the Pierre Moerlens Gong i also just could never get on with.

Can I tell if its hybrid ? Don't want to buy an SACD player
99.99% of all Sacds are Hybrids mike sell 100s of them & they all play on standard CD players sacd layer sounds very good not played the 16/44.1 layer yet
or buy a OPPO 95 or another universal players - plays everthing sacd/bluray/dvds etc or a PS1 & Rip the Sacd & play back via a DSD Dac but nothing beats a quality ground up design for Sacd deicated player

This will (i.m.h.o.) blow your mind Currently selling from £3.18 used or from £4.49 new on Amazon I don't know about classic - there's a lot of willy waving (see how fast I can play) going on. The opening piece (Mediterranean Sundance) is far more musical on Elegant Gypsy. This sounds more like musical gymnastics to me, with the emphasis on gymnastics rather than musical

Ok I've given this enough plays now to make a comment . I think my brain is too slow to process this music , after the opening track I feel like I need to lie down. Thousand Island Park is what I thought the album would be like the fast guitar play is not something I enjoy , the lovely Open Counrty Joy is IMO ruined by the jammimg in the middle its like somebody rushed into the studio and let rip before secruity got him and then its carries on blissfully . Resolution is pretty good , to sum up, very talented musicians but a tad over the top. 6/10

That's kind of what what I first thought of it when it was first played to me (in my teens). I gave it a few more goes a year or so later and it kind of revealed itself to me.

First time I ever played it I knew it was a mistake.
In those days I used to borrow LPs from a library, put them on a cassette and play while in the car, where I spent a lot of my day.
There came a point at say listen no.10 where it bit me and I havn't been able to put it away since

Chris and Mike , I must say that I probably would have really taken to this back in '73 , but like everything else my music is slowing down

I get the slowing down thing. Mike - for pity's sake don't recommend anyone plays this while driving - you'll kill 'em in the first minute!

It took me a decade or so to start to "get" my choice for album of the month 2nd time round. I'm expecting a rough ride from most everyone here When's my next go due?
