It's a tragedy Gilles never got the titles he deserved IMO. Scheckter was a very good driver, but Villeneuve was a pure racer and I still remember the way he got my blood racing. I guess we've had a few racer v driver showdowns over the years but that one stood out for me as the most comparable.

I was a little young (being born in 1978) to have really known the Gilles and Jody fight first hand but I have watched it on TV reruns quite a bit.
Personally, I remember the Senna, Prost fights, with Nigel Mansell somewhere in the mix, all good times.
The Schumacher era for me wasn't that interesting, probably because he wasn't really challenged that significantly, yes Hakkinen was about initially, but between him and Alsono coming into F1 there wasn't a lot of a challenge.
The Red Bull era was equally uninteresting IMHO, possibly something to do with German drivers and their robot like driving, similar to Rosberg (although he is nowhere near as good as Schumacher or Vettel).
Personally, I have liked Lewis Hamilton since before he came into F1 because he has heart, he is also human and makes silly mistakes, but when he is on-form he is unbeatable by anyone (and I include Alonso and Vettel in that mix).

Ultimately it's up to him to ensure the win. If his car fails, then we can all understand that.

Looks like the FIA are planning to schedule Lewis to appear in the Thursday press conference. Will he appear and will this be good or bad for him? www.gptoday.com/full_story/view/584271/FIA_to_put_Hamilton_back_in_spotlight/Personally I thougt he misbehaved then looked to blame others for the furore. Best thing he can do for himself is face the music and get it behind him. He can also articulate his ideas to liven up the format and make it more fan-oriented. That could turn it into a positive. An alternate view may be that he declines to attend and focuses on the race. I guess it depends on how well he can block out the media attention.

I personally didn't see him as misbehaving, more having a bit of fun which was taken out of context.
Those press conferences are very mundane and the format really does need to be revisited.

Funny how journalists never see themselves as 'misbehaving' even when they are persistently rude, in-your-face and ask unresearched and inane questions all the time.

Yes I thought it was funny how they managed to push all of the blame for that onto Lewis when a lot of it was down to their mundane and irritating questions!

Totally agree - not even a storm in a tea cup but certain people who dont warm to him for whatever reason, jump on it like he's committed the crime of the century - daft ! His suggestion that the fans should ask the questions at such meetings was a good one but we know that F1 doesnt appear to like or acknowledge the ideas of the drivers. Likely the least of his probs at the mo to be honest as he'll be focused on nailing the remaining quali's and races towards somehow turning round the 33 points deficit, oh! and there's bad starts to sort. A very tall order indeed with only four races remaining, BUT it can all change in just one race and if Rosberg has either a very bad one or DNF ..................

I for one wouldn't be at all disappointed if Rosberg 'finally' had a mechanical issue this year!

Firstly, fair play to Haimlton for showing up at the press conference. I think it's better for F1, more advantageous to him psychologically and also better for the title race.
That said, he was still fiddling with his fecking phone! He's not the only one either so this isn't directed solely at him. It seems to be a socially offensive attitude that is infecting society. It's made all the worse when we witness the likes of F1 drivers doing it though.
To put it bluntly, when you receive the equivalent of a lottery win every week, you have a playboy lifestyle and you are a role model to millions, you can at least leave your bloody phone behind when you attend press conferences. Using your phone in such situations shows absolutely no semblance of manners or class. Sure, this sort of behaviour is a disease spreading right through society, but that's all the more reason for role models to behave better.
In former years, I've taken disciplinary action against staff who used mobile phones in the.workplace and I felt I was right to do so. Those individuals didn't have a fraction of the rewards and advantages of an F1 driver, which makes it all the more infuriating to see over-privileged brats getting away with such bad manners.
Am I the only one who finds professionals messing about with phones during official business offensive? I see so much in today's "social media" culture that simply make me want to disappear off the grid and leave the world to its sickness.

I'd call it ignorant and offensive, they obviously don't give a fu*k.

With no Sky and the TV packed away I managed to watch the US GP over Sky Go on the tablet (just before the internet was switched off)! What a great track and a really enjoyable venue.
Suffice to say it was good to see Hamilton get away from the line well for once, and control the race. A shame that Ricciardo lost his second place due to the Virtual Safety Car. Driver of the Race for me was Sainz with a truly heroic display of fending off Alonso until unfortunately his tyres went on the final lap.
The outcome is still in the balance!

The US Grand Prix was intriguing for me, whilst Lewis won and he was happy, he didn't seem quite as cheerful as I might have expected (maybe me). Rosberg certainly didn't seem particularly happy that Hamilton has closed the gap, although only by 7 points, maybe because he was so thoroughly beaten by Hamilton I wonder and it was a pity that the VSC caused Ricciardo to lose out to Rosberg as I think he thoroughly deserved it. Verstappen was funny on more than one occasion throughout the race, firstly by bemoaning a comment made by his team over the radio with the comment 'I'm not here to finish 4th'. Then to come into the pit lane prematurely and finally to park his car in the way resulting in the VSC which caused Ricciardo issues... showing his immaturity or a little rattled by the overtake ruling?, doubt it'll phase him. Driver of the day for me would probably be Alonso or Sainz, both were on serious form throughout their fight

Ricciardo is becoming the unlucky man of F1, just like Webber before him. A real pity and I sincerely hope he proves me wrong. I'd love to see him win a title.

He was very bubbly on the podium in spite of his bad luck. You can't help but like the man.

Personally I think Ricciardo is one of the best drivers out there and given the right equipment will become a World Champion.
Next year is going to be interesting, they are talking about it going back to the aero days which means Red Bull are likely to come back out on top seeing as they have a reinvigorated Adrian Newey in their corner. With a good aero package, they don't necessarily need the best engine I'd suggest. But I still think it'll take a lot to knock Mercedes off their perch.
