Well I was going to choose 1989, which is Ryan Adams cover of the Taylor Swift album, which I think is truly excellent, but as most of the album choice subscribers knew I intended to pick it, I thought it prudent to change . . . doh!
I know a few here are familiar with this excellent album, but I reckon most have passed it by, which could be remiss.
The Delines - Colfax
2014
The Delines are predominantly the work and brainchild of Willy Vlautin, a superb songwriter who prior to this project is better known as front man and principal songwriter for the band Richmond Fontaine, which is how I discovered them. Willy is also a published author and there is a film of one of his books currently on Netflix, 'The Motel Life'. Willy does dark and moody well, so if you like up-beat music, this might not be for you. Colfax is definitely a late night slow burner of an album, which is best enjoyed with the lights low and a glass of something.
The shining star for me in this work (apart from Willy's outstanding song-writing) is the vocal work by Amy Boone. Willy takes a back seat from his normal front of stage and hands the baton to Amy, who is an extremely accomplished singer with an exceptional voice. Critically acclaimed upon release and I have been lucky enough to see them live a few times.
My favourite song on the album is 'The Oil Rigs at Night'. I asked Willy once what this song was about and he apparently used to spend some time with off shore oilmen, who told him of their martial problems because they were away from home so much. Willy thought there's a song there and wrote it from the viewpoint of the wives/girlfriends who were left at home alone whilst their partners were working on the rigs.
I play this album a lot and for me it's an easy 10/10. There's nothing here I don't like, so hopefully there might be something for others?
