Terry Reid - 'Terry Reid' Lately I've been playing a lot of Reid's music again. What a career this fella could have had.....several times over! What would you do in this situation? - You've got a recording contract, a label and star producer backing you. Not to mention a cast iron guarantee from Eric Clapton that you'll be the support slot for Cream's much touted farewell tour of America. You're about to go into the studio to record your first solo album when you get a phone call from a mate called Jimmy Page. His band, The Yardbirds have just broken up & he's looking for a new vocalist. On the other hand, Aretha Franklin is commenting that ‘there are only three things happening in London, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Terry Reid’ When faced with this, Terry Reid decided that the best thing would be to follow the path of the solo artist. So he recommended another singer to Jimmy Page. That bloke (Robert Plant) got the job. As if that wasn't bad enough, when Deep Purple decided to part company with Rod Evans, they invited Terry to take his place. Guess what............oh yes, that's right - he turned 'em down! He wrote a song that was recorded by The Hollies in 1968. However, it wasn't released on the album it was intended for and never turned up till 2011. Later on in 1969, Nash persuaded Crosby and Stills to record the same song as CSN. Apparently, Stephen Stills got the hump because he didn't have as many of his songs on the album as the others, so it was shelved and didn't surface until 1991. Meanwhile Reid released his own version.....

Nina Persson - Animal Heart
This took a few listens but I'm totally hooked on the songs and her near-perfect style of delivery and voice. Whether she's in The Cardigans or A Camp or singing solo, she rarely puts a foot wrong.

Do you like it Tim? I like Joni and I'm usually happy when there's a Mingus among us, but I can't poke up with her work from this period. Not one bit.

I prefer the earlier Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

I need to be in the right mood for Mingus Chris, but yes I do like it - I find it fascinating and I enjoy following artists along their musical journey wherever it takes them, good or bad. She's getting toward the precipice of her golden period by this time though. I have been enjoying For the Roses and Ladies of the Canyon recently too. THOSL was the first Joni Mitchell album I bought Martin.

All the others get played constantly. Joni and Paul Simon are just about my favourites from that era. My iTunes albums below. If I had to choose a favourite, it would be Hejira

I am a late-comer to Eva Cassidy. Sue has 4cds. No vinyl tracked down yet. Trying to accompany her singing "over the rainbow" for a friend's birthday party ("the guests bring the entertainment ") got me back into playing guitar a bit, but at the price of an excruciatingly poor debut performance. A fabulous interpreter of songs

Just doing a test recording on a new batch of blank tapes, using one of my 'go to' LPs for testing new tape:

I think you will like Boards of Canada and Autechre Pinch - if you don't already have them of course

Heh, yup! Full discographies, on vinyl where possible. The early Warp stuff was one of my principal gateways into electronic music. I don't tend to listen to it so much these days, after veering towards less overtly melodic stuff, but have been revisiting it recently after retrieving a load of my old records out of storage - Tri Repetae hasn't been far from the platter since!

XTC - Drums and Wires
I forget what a superb album this is - and very well made too. This was one of the test albums for my jump into the higher end hifi in the early 80s. Still love it

Boards of Canada have some wonderful music Agreed! Though I tend to prefer their earlier stuff, up to Geogaddi. I wasn't too keen on The Campfire Headphase - found it a little saccharine - and Tomorrow's Harvest didn't really grab me, either. Still, I bloody love Music Has The Right To Children

I'm surprised how many old songs she covers, even back to Danny Boy
