Ornette Coleman – The Shape Of Jazz To Come I tried again and it had to come off after a few bars. Never going to be my thing. I might as well be listening to Balinese Gamelan (yes, I've heard it live).

Ornette Coleman – The Shape Of Jazz To Come I tried again and it had to come off after a few bars. Never going to be my thing. I might as well be listening to Balinese Gamelan (yes, I've heard it live). Martin, I think it is a matter of getting in the right mood, try some thrash metal first and then pop Ornette Coleman – The Shape Of Jazz To Come on the system. I think if your brain is set to harmonic melodies then your lost listening to Ornette Coleman because he deviates out and away from that construct often. He and and his fellow players often ignore the constraints of playing within the chord structure of a tune playing notes and line that can sound wrong or out of tune but lead into other avenues of improvisation, and they play with tempo greatly which can be confusing, thus it can be very hard to relate to what is being played, although at times the players will resolve back to a tune, so to speak. I must admit it took me a while to get my head round it. I persevered as so many critics and other jazz musicians highlight this album and Ornette Coleman as one of the great innovators in Jazz, which influenced many later on, but maybe not to such extremes. Another Free Jazz album is Pharoah Sanders - 'Izipho Zam (My Gifts)', this is from 1973 and also considered a classic by some, I won't lie it is a challenging listen, but the musicianship and recording is well worth a listen.

I've tried free jazz on several occasions and it's never going to work for me.
Don't get me wrong: I'm happy with dissonance - I do listen to Shostakovich, Poulenc, Stravinsky etc. It's not a problem for me, there are millions more albums out there to listen to.

I would thoroughly recommend a listen to this album, the songs may be deep and dark in places but it is rather beautiful. Release of the month on Qobuz. Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown
