This is one of the reasons why I like Spotify as I am constantly discovering new music. I do think Roon is Gold standard in how easy and logical it is to use.

Yup, discovery is great if you enjoy that. If you just want to repeat play your 400 albums and wear out your Rumours album, then it would be a waste of time, but I'm not that kind of music lover

Yep, a long way for me. Before it was vinyl and CD's optimized the digital with a solid VRDS transport going into a DAC, Tube output. Excellent sound. In one of the sessions at the home of an audio friend, he streamed stuff and we could toggle well known recordings in regular CD resolution versus the same version in HiRes. Point of no return for me but also a long way of investigating and above all listening. First side by side Tidal/Qobuz and getting the streamer that could do the Hi-Res propely. Discovered that it started to get into the right direction having the macbook connected via USB cable to a CA851N. Via wifi it was limited to a lower Res and I even heard differences when I used the macbook or the iphone to control stuff. So intermediate status, USB wired macbook to DAC/Streamer comparing Tidal/Qobuz. Couldn't get Tidal to sound "right", it was overblown in a lot of cases but then again Qobuz might seem a bit "edgy" at that time as well. Went for Qobuz and they were even willing to stretch the trial period for some further debugging on the sound difference when going via wifi. Still USB connection worked/sounded as it should and I trialed ROON for UI, it was sure I had to keep that one in the end since the Qobuz app/site control was way to limited in functionality and managing music. On top of that I found the extra processing features in ROON to even up-sample and for a significant amount of recordings his did improve the sound quality (closer to the "how can I explain that specific Vinyl kind of sound...and I am not talking about noise and scratching things"). So, status: Qobuz on Macbook with ROON, USB Cable across the room to the 851N DAC. Perfect! Sound that is. But having the macbook as the controller....a cable across the living room is not the best option :-(. Solving that..Macbook without a screen next to the DAC connected with USB and controlled with another device? Close ;-). NUCLEUS->USB Cable->851N. Macbook/iPad as controller.
And that is basically where I am now. More than happy. Majority will remain Vinyl and for digital never played another CD. Added an extra internal SSD to the Nucleus and attached a simple CD drive. When popping in a CD it automatically copies it to the SSD, but then again it takes a (too) long time. So, next step might be to copy the rarest (OOP) CD's that are not on Qobuz, get rid of any lousy CDs and store the in-betweens(?)...

Ohh, and it does help me to reduce the number of LPs I buy since I can have a fast full quality pre-listen of anything I find in reviews for example ;-)

closer to the "how can I explain that specific Vinyl kind of sound...and I am not talking about noise and scratching things" That was the point I reached when I sold my turntable and SACD player. The sound I get from Qobuz now is way beyond what I ever achieved from LPs.

It's 9 years now since I moved over to file based audio and I've never once questioned that decision, for me it's the perfect solution and it's come a long way in those 9 years. Roon is the icing on the cake. I have to say though Martin, you're probably the last person I'd have thought would jump ship - and you've not just jumped ship, you've chosen a Nimitz class aircraft carrier

I have to say though Martin, you're probably the last person I'd have thought would jump ship - and you've not just jumped ship, you've chosen a Nimitz class aircraft carrier LOL - I was determined but there were moments when I wondered what I was doing. Saying that, I'm impressed with your elegant Roon solution, Tim.

I'm extremely pleased with it, it's exceeded my expectations so far. The case itself feels cold to touch during normal playback and the only point it got warm was when indexing my library on the NAS, so it's not being stressed at all. I'm actually not in a hurry to put an SSD in right now, as it's performing well as is. So I might delay that for now, I'm just chilling with it. I was going to try different software on it, Volumio and then Linux Mint with JRiver, but for now I can't be arsed with that either, I'm too busy enjoying the music

Difficult to get into fiddling when the music sounds so good
