A company I had never heard of before but I was asked to make a pair of these to a set of plans. Once the company saw the build, they sent me another set of units to assess. Rather than do a whole set of stages here, if you click on my website address (signature) and go to Flickr, you can see progress. The original white pair I made is there too. I have been listening to them for a week or so now and am starting to really like them. They are what I assume is a typical german design, very precise and clean with well extended bass. Unusual design though. There are two active bass drivers, one in each section with two passive drivers. The passives are controlled by varying resistance to adjust the damping. very effective. They won't replace the Quads but it will be interesting to see how they perform once the big lounge is finshed. That will be 8 metres x 5 metres with a mezzanine and the ceiling going up to 6 metres. Teufel recommend a minimum of 100 watts per channel but in the present room, even the Stereo 20 drives them pretty well. Since they have had some positive feedback, the company is going to start producing DIY kits including a flat pack cabinet. Its been fun being part of the assessment process and it has meant that I get to keep the speakers!! Can't complain at that

Very impressive, Gordon, and beautifully finished. Your sense of satisfaction must be great!
P.S. where is the model 80, or is that a typo?

Hi Gordon, I've been following your progress on these (as you may know) - it looks like a fun build. I'm very jealous of your skills.

Being retired has its advantages. I can now do stuff for us rather than always making things for other people. As far as skills are concerned, a good part of a job like this is having the right tools. Knowing how to use them is obviously important but they do make life easy.

Moving coil speakers in the Steadman homestead? You'll be giving up those flaky valve amplifiers next! Are you still sitting in the fireplace to listen to them? Looking forward to sampling, although sue is coming round to the idea of stacked 57s in the right room.
(can't find the smilies on my Android -)

You've got a bit of a stutter there, Richard. I can't remove the dupes as I'm on mobile too.

Not sure which of the six to answer!!
There are now 4 pairs of 'ordinary' speakers in the house. Its just that for serious (thats me) listening, the Quads do it better. Strange thing though, I listened to them stacked once and wasn't that convinced. I actually prefer the single pair with just a touch of reinforcement at the bottom end with the REL.
In the new lounge?? Who knows? It will certainly be big enough for them stacked. I will have to get my second pair back from my nephew though and that might take a bit of arm wrestling.

Sorry Martin. I've attended to my own gardening, and weeded them out. Teething troubles, and bloody BT internet, which I took on for the sport...

I've been on BT Infinity here for almost a year and it's been pretty trouble-free apart from one outage of two days where the whole area went down.

Yes - generally I've been impressed. When its good its very good. They clearly had troubles with their DNS this morning. I spent 2 wasted hours trying to fix it, before I gave up, and it was working fine when I got back (but same problem on 4G via 02, so not just my broadband connection). Speeds are pretty good too - 4.3mbps nearly 5 miles from the exchange on copper. My problems are when the local pikies steal all the copper cables in the village...
(Still no smilies???)

Oh yes, this morning was a disaster with their DNS going up in smoke. You can always switch to Google DNS if you know where to change the network settings - use 8.8.8.8
I get 73Mbps here as the cabinet is up the street.

Just a test to see if I can insert pics!! Interesting. Maybe its a Mac thing but I have to do it in two stages. First just paste in the code direct to my post. Then edit it and then copy and paste it into the usual image icon!! Still, so long as it works.

I'm getting to like them more and more. They have been running for a couple of weeks now and are loosening up nicely. The only disadvantage is that they are not really a low volume speaker. The bass only really comes to life once they have a bit of power through them. Maybe a bit more loosening up required. As soon as I've finished plastering the lounge, we won't be doing much more to it for a while as the bathroom is next so I can get them up there with Ronnie's Pioneer A757 (100 real watts per channel) and we will see how they do.

They need a proper bloody tranny amp driving them instead of those weedy bottle things you are using on them, bless them
