Then from the DAC, I am feeding the signal into this little valve preamplifier.

I have been on another forum and been advised to consider various models of speaker and my short list is these. Have I missed any that you members think should be on my list? Which is:- Hitachi Towers Spender D7 Sony SS-F6000 Ruark Prologue Two Monitor Audio Silver 10

If you can hear them that be the best way to go or at the very least get on sale or return getting your speakers right can make a huge difference and will depend on your room, equipment and listening preferences I did not like the Monitor Silver 20s which should have more scale and bass than the 10s when I heard them, the rest I not heard

I am not looking for bass, treble nor attack, but rather neutrality. My personal opinion is that a system should not have a 'sound' just reproduce what is on the source without any colouration what so ever. I've been getting as much information as I can and any thoughts are gratefully accepted, thank you.

Yes sale or return best as you say each room different The nearest yu get to neutral will be the electricbeach speakers Very clean sound But every speaker I heard has it own take on music to some degree or other

Are you particularly wedded to having floorstanders? Whilst I have Tannoys now, I have never held on to a pair of traditional floorstanders for long as none of them could do 'imaging' like a good pair of standmounts ... In fact the only ones I really liked were Audio Physic Virgo speakers, which were superb with excellent imaging and all round performance, but the sideways firing bass didn't work with my room lay out. I think they were something like this - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDIO-PHYSIC-VIRGO-2-STEREO-SPEAKERS-WITH-ORIGINAL-PACKAGING-SHIPPING-CARTONS-/291520310954?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43dff6eeaaHave you considered anything from the old Royd range? I haven't heard a Royd speaker that I didn't like and whilst their prices have increased on the second hand market, prices are still very affordable.

Ok so maybe a little bit of a plug (delete if inappropriate please admin) but I have a pair of excellent Epos ES-14 speakers for sale (stand mounts) and I can really recommend them… I had to buy speakers in the silly money category to improve on them!

Spenders eliminated due to hefty price tag. All of those speakers will have a hefty price tag relative to what you have now.

The Sony fits in your price bracket you might get lucky second hand with the Monitor Audio Silver 10s No idea around the Hitachi speakers but looking at them I imagine over your price range The Rurak I doubt you can find second hand at the price you looking for

Saying a speaker will not suit me for one reason or another is just as useful as recommending a speaker. Thanks to the column above I have now eliminated Hitachi [very reluctantly as the 3's have been very serviceable] and Ruark. I have also not added the Virgos because, though I have the money I don't want to buy very expensive speakers and then spend time and effort once again upgrading sources and amp. I've been advised that what I have now is pretty well balanced both in terms of cost and performance and it looks like my current list is now down to three possibles. Kent Engineering Foundery C5 Sony SS-F6000 Monitor Audio [not yet picked the definite model]. Though I thank the member who suggested stand mounters, I don't tweek and it seems to me there is always someone advocating either filling stands with lead shot or bolting speakers to stands and so on.......... I just think floor standing speakers will make me content. 'If' I buy the right ones! Just as a final point; when I got the amplifier, the seller threw in plenty of QED 79 strand anniversary cable. In another forum [yes I like to get as much information as I can] the wire has been trashed by no less than four advisers. Yet What High Fi Loved it! What are you kind gentlemen's opinion's on this please?

I am a renowned for being hard to get excited about cable. I have used QED 79 strand in the past and think it decent cable. It would be my first choice for cheap decent quality. I use it for all the other channels on my AV system. If you pin me up against a wall, I would have to concede that there is other cable I find a bit better - like the talk 3 I use for the main 2 channel. But there are plenty of things I'd change before I worried too much about the QED79 in a starter system.

I should add though that I am not a tweaker myself and have never done more than put speakers on decent rigid stands ... Same thing with the cable - if you like QED 79 I would ignore other people's opinions regarding it ... Why don't you start with that cable when you get the new speakers and see how you get on.
