It has been hot today and they say it will get hotter. I found a fan in Costco that is operated by a remote control. It has seen good use today and I am probably going to use it tonight just to fall asleep. Luckily it has a timer function for that. My bedroom windows opens up looking down on a busy road so I don't leave it open at night. The Volvic is running low as well. I got loads of Coke in small bottles, but too much sugary drink in this kind of heat is not going to do much good for my health.

Hate this weather. The car was an absolute furnace this evening, impossible to get in it before cooling it down. Now I'm having trouble sleeping

People have different lifestyles. I feel sorry for office workers in London to wear suits and have to catch trains or the underground etc. I used to work in Florida for a while labouring and it was a killer. I now work from an office at home 80% of the time, the other 20% I'm in an air conditioned car on my way to different jobs that we are running. In the evenings we have fans around the house, they make a BIG difference.

I had the misfortune to be in London today. 34C. Horrible. At the time of my career where I don't wear suits fortunately. So short sleeved shirt, chinos and Five Fingers footwear.
Trains late and slow "because the rails have buckled in the heat". Swear to god. Makes you wonder at the incompetence of rail transport - it is not even as though we are in a hot county. Oh yes - leaves on the line, wrong type of snow - remember those excuses?
Fan in the bedroom tonight.

I've given up this morning, closed my office windows and turned on the aircon. Forecast to be 35C today and that is so far above my maximum operating temperature it's a joke.
Soak it up? Bring on winter!

In this country we rarely need aircon. One of the services I run is a Outreach service and my advice is for people today to stay as much as they can in aircon buildings I have two fans going on full blast all the windows open and still fills to hot in the office.

I tried running fans but it just blew the hot air about.
Surely what we need is a portable aircon device that does actually cool the air rather than just blowing it.
Does such a device exist that doesn't cost a fortune ? Even the pricey Dyson 'hot and cool' doesn't actually cool the air despite its name.
p.s. I'm just getting over health problems and need to keep my temperature down especially at night..

I'm just getting over health problems and need to keep my temperature down especially at night.. The key to a proper aircon device working is that they move heat. So the typical cheap freestanders are infinitely more effective if the "exhaust" pipe runs through a hole of exactly the right side, rather than a gap in the window, or a half open door. The things you can get for £200 or so in homebase work well enough in a reasonable room size. You are only going to effectively cool one room with one device, so don't go leaving the door open and hope to cool the house. 2 box units are better since the noise and heat are outside - and if you get a reversible one will work as a low energy cost heater in the winter (because they move heat - so use about 1/3 the energy). I plan to install one in my office in France where is may be just a tad warmer than here (not least because it won't be in the shade of a mature willow tree as the one I am in now is)

As Pinkie says, the cheap aircon units need the exhaust routed properly, but they do work. There are some versions that use a water spray to help cool things down.
For a really cheap solution, you can buy an aerosol water spray that emits a fine mist. Spray this on yourself, and evaporation does the rest. Here in Framce, we open all the windows at night to cool the house down, and close them before it warms up.

The water spray works really well outside where aircon won't. We first encountered it in a restaurant in Ax-les-Thermes - where we had sat down to eat and suddenly there was this fine mist of water. It gave a burst about every minute. Are they readily available for a domestic install. Our new covered terrace faces west and can be like a furnace. How much? Where can I get one?

It's an aerosol can. Not for domestic install, but very portable, as it will fit in a large pocket....

The right doors and windows open, to drag the cool(er) air in
In a previous big office 4 fans that pushed the air around in a circle, adjusted so there was a draught on each punter.
Drink loads of water.
Cool loose clothes

WTF? However there are installed systems like the one at the restaurant at Ax and if they are sensible money I may well treat myself. It's so funny the first time somebody new encounters one apart from anything else, and it would be good for the dogs

They were in abundance when we visited Rome last year. Smaller, internal versions are available from E.Leclerc.
Google "water misting systems outdoor cooling" and you will see that they are readily available.

Italian Gelato's the next BIG THING, Martin.
Watch out for it in supermarkets.
The nicest ice cream I have ever had was from a local vendor (Roma Caffe).
They used to enter it in competitions in Italy and were always winning awards with it.
