I noticed that Testament do a reissue of the Oistrakh Beethoven - I confess to ignoring it as I thought it would most likely be digitally sourced and cut ... I'm without a good recording of the Beethoven even after trying to compare a variety of different performances on YouTube - what are your personal favourites Albert? The Beethoven is a great work and has a number of great interpretations that I like ... these are both analog and digital recommendations: 1. Wolfgang Schneiderhan on Deutsche Grammophon - stereo version 2. Jascha Heifetz on RCA Living Stereo 3. Christian Tetzlaff on Arte Nova (CD) with David Zinman conducting 4. Nathan Milstein (EMI/Capitol) - there is a Columbia SAX of this ... very pricey in blue/silver pressing but obtainable in red semi-circle pressing with (in my opinion) comparable sound I've seen Tetzlaff perform live about three times now in London - he was outstanding with Bartok if my memory serves me right ... But I was a bit dissapointed with a solo recital of the Partitas a few months back. It was very understated indeed, just a bit too understated and the polar opposite of Kyung-Wha Chung's 'Chaconne' which just blew me away with its sense of drama and scale ...

I´ll second the notion about Campoli. I do like his style of playing and also find it a freshing change from the other greats of the period. I have his London FFSS of his Tchaikovsky with Argenta and the Ace of Diamonds of his Mendelssohn and Bruch. He also had a later release of violin and piano duo works that is very nice.

Whoa - he did that in recital? I know he recorded that some years ago for Hannsler and it has been previously praised. I think I heard it once but passed it up for reissues from Grumiaux and more recent recordings from Julia Fischer and Isabelle Faust.

That is just ridiculous. I bought the Japanese 24-bit remastered CD reissue and was not impressed. I like Cluytens but that much money for the record is not for its sound quality. That is just hyperinflated for rarity, in my humble opinion.

I have that Japanese remaster and either the master tapes are not in good condition or the remastering has somehow adversely affected the SQ as the vinyl is so much better. The real bargain ids the CFP reissue.

He sure did - he was a last-minute replacement for Midori who was 'indisposed' ... I would still like to see her play - have seen some performances on YouTube that I have been rather impressed by ... I recently bought Chung's Decca recording of the Partitas - it's now one of my favourite lp's.

If you ever find a used copy of the Cluytens EMI Testament reissue of the complete Ravel orchestral works, pick it up. It is really nice and if you can find it, it is far less than the originals, which always seem to sell for $1000+. I got mine about 3 years ago from Acoustic Sounds for $100 for 4 LPs. It might take a little bit of hunting, but copies do surface once in a while.
