I would love to know just how good the sound quality is of these 'legendary' recordings that people go crazy for.
Am listening to Bizet's L'Arlesienne now - one of those works that I recognised the moment I heard it but couldn't put a name to. Very fine it is too ... Don't think I would fork out 2K for it though no matter how good the recording!

Sound quality and performance is excellent and whilst it has always been sought after the price people are prepared to pay seems to have gone up tenfold over the last decade which is a better investment than gold

I thought that Speakers Corner only did Decca reissues? If they also have access to the HMV Columbia catalogue then I'd be very interested

Seems Speakers Corner don't have access to EMI/HMV Columbia tapes so it must be a blatant plug

Try the Kogan Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Beethoven Violin Concerto, or Leclair Violin Sonatas with Elizaveta Gilels ... I haven't seen a copy sell for less than $2000.

I find sound quality to be variable and that the price is more reflective of the overall "collectibility" and rarity of the LP. For instance, the Classics for Pleasure reissue of the Kogan Beethoven is excellent and can be had for less than $20-30. We've commented about some of this on our blog milestomozart.blogspot.com. An example of where price to sound quality ratio suffers is the David Oistrakh Beethoven Archduke Trio Columbia SAX. Consistently would sell for $200+ as a blue/silver label. I bought it off Ebay and played it ... was very very disappointed in the dry, somewhat monophonic, congested sound. I sold it within 1-2 months of owning it. You have to be really careful before making the monetary investment, unless you're just flush with cash. I learned the lesson the hard way but was fortunate to be able to turn around some of these albums relatively easily on the auction market.

I have the Kogan Tchaikovsky on B/S SAX, the Beethoven on CFP , the Lalo on WRC & CFP and the Brahms on SXLP. I did find a copy of the Kogan Giles in a charity shop but unfortunately it looked like someone had used it for a cutting board. The WRC issues of Columbia SAX, ASD, SP Erato, Everest and other labels are often hidden gems and worth seeking out.

Thanks for the WRC recommendation ... I've not stumbled across too many of those in the States but will keep on looking. What kind of knife did they use for that Kogan/Gilels cutting board?
I have the Kogan Brahms Testament reissue. Decent sound at a fraction of the original price.
