WRC is a new one on me - brings back memories of the dreadful Brittania Music (lp and tape club) back in the 80's ... I remember they would automatically send you their album of the month unless you told them not to!!

I have the Kogan Brahms Testament reissue. Decent sound at a fraction of the original price. I noticed that Testament do a reissue of the Oistrakh Beethoven - I confess to ignoring it as I thought it would most likely be digitally sourced and cut ... I'm without a good recording of the Beethoven even after trying to compare a variety of different performances on YouTube - what are your personal favourites Albert?

World Record Club is in a different league en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Record_ClubWRC also commissioned recordings and there are some very good ones This Schubert recording with the Lansdowne quartet and Amaryllis Fleming (Ian of Bond Fame's sister) is excellent.

YES! I owned the original once ... got it from Watson Records when it was on sale, but I sold it later to finance a number of other vinyl purchases. I bet the WRC sounds just as good if not cleaner than the original.

The Beethoven is a great work and has a number of great interpretations that I like ... these are both analog and digital recommendations: 1. Wolfgang Schneiderhan on Deutsche Grammophon - stereo version 2. Jascha Heifetz on RCA Living Stereo 3. Christian Tetzlaff on Arte Nova (CD) with David Zinman conducting 4. Nathan Milstein (EMI/Capitol) - there is a Columbia SAX of this ... very pricey in blue/silver pressing but obtainable in red semi-circle pressing with (in my opinion) comparable sound

Returning to SAX 2566 Heinz Wallberg's recording of the L'Arlesienne Suites with the Philharmonia is a good second choice to the Cluytens version. Originally a full price issue in Italy it was released in the UK on the SXLP label

2566 I am not familiar with that particular recording. Looks interesting. What about: 1. Jean Morel with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden orchestra on RCA Living Stereo? 2. Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI ASD? Not a big fan of the recording only because it sounds like constricted stereo, but it does have a beautiful cover. 3. Karajan's Columbia SAX recording along with the music from Carmen?

I don't have the more recording but I do have the Karajan on B/S SAX and the Beecham on HQS 1108 which sounds far better than the ASD I also have: Jean Martinon with the Chicago SO on RCA SB 6741 William Van Otterloo and the Orchestra of Hague on DG 135 023 Alexander Gibson with ODLSR on Decca SXL6350 Your mention of Carmen give me an excuse to wax lyrical about the Shchedrin Carmen Ballet Suite. IMHO. simply one of the most amazing recordings ever made in the world of classical music. theaudiostandard.net/post/new/1413

WOw - never seen that one before but will now look for it on your recommendation! I'm also interested in finding the Beecham HQS, especially if it is a significant improvmeent over the ASD!

Testament all AAA do not have a original to compare myself Pure Analogue Audiophile Mastering Testament has revived these classic titles from the EMI catalog using only the original EMI master tapes, cut onto lacquer at EMI's Abbey Road Studios and mastered using full analog techniques throughout production.

I assume that you mean this one I have a spare copy somewhere but at the moment can't find it. Same goes for Oistrakh's Brahms For an original old recording the Campoli recording on the HMV SXLP label is very good value.

I've never seen that Campoli before .... how does that one sound? Campoli's playing has a raw edge that I find refreshing compared to other recordings of the period. It's certainly not a slick a Kogan or lush as Heifetz. The violin is a little forward but as it can be picked up quite cheaply it's a good alternative to have. Incidentally the SXLP is the original first issue with a later reissue on CFP now.jbhifi.com.au/Album/5052575157844

Not sure about the hot stamper hyperbole but the description of the recording is a fair assessment. I think it's also on the TAS list and yes it does give your system a bit of a workout. www.better-records.com/product.aspx?pf_id=bizetcarme_1405I think there was an Alto 180g reissue which strangely had the S/C label and not the HMV Meloydia label of the original. I also suspect it was a digital transfer.

He takes a liberty with the opening but the rest of it is sublime, and beautifully recorded. I will listen to the Campoli Beethoven and then Oistrakh on YouTube - I certainly don't want a slick / lush Beethoven, so that sounds promising!
