Aeropress colleagues, I have developed an essential new hack. And the best thing about it - it's free! Yes, you'll be using something that you wouldn't have thought twice about throwing away ...
If you aren't already a photographer, buy yourself a very expensive camera and then buy a very expensive lens. To protect your expensive lens buy the best quality UV filter you can afford. Now here's where the magic happens. You'll have been wondering where to store your Aeropress metal filter when not on duty - now you can use the plastic box that came with your UV filter! It's the perfect design with its circular cutout inside and flip open lid for easy access. Bingo!
So you can use this case that ordinarily you would have thrown away, which makes it a very environmentally conscious choice too.
Whilst this won't cost you a penny, you are welcome to make a donation which will help keep up my selfless work - I will provide you with a Paypal address, but make sure you send the payment as "friends and family" please ... I thank you.

Shame I ditched my metal filter Jules - I can't now avail myself of such a tremendous innovation

Yes that was a little short sighted old chap, but never too late to join the club again!

I hate to say this, and it may not have occurred to you, but I have the perfect storage place for my filter:
...I keep it in the Aeropress.

Just a little levity ... but I like to keep the holder in a cupboard.
As you were!

I was given some 'coffee bags' by Taylors of Harrogate, free with some random online order. Taylors are a fine company but my first experience is not good. Following their instructions I get something just a step above flavoured water and nowhere near as good as my mum's instant coffee! This was with a coffee rated 4/6 in strength - I'll try the 6/6 and give it some extra agitation to see if I can extract something resembling flavour.

Jules mentioned (his Mum's) instant coffee, and I'd like to take the opportunity stomp all over the hallowed ground(s) of this thread to say that if you have to drink instant, try Carte Noire Intense, Arabica and Robusta Dark Roast. I cannot drink any other type now. No crema, obviously, but it tastes very decent. Ive just ordered 6 more jars on Amazon as it works out at £3.00 a jar. Sainsbury's currently have it at £3.25 / 100g instead of the ususal £4.30, and yes, it has to be the "Intense".

I've been experimenting with the pre-infusion times, and overall shot pull times.
I've settled on 7 secs pre-infusion and overall pull time of 25 secs. If I go longer on the pull times there's wet puck syndrome 😱
This seems to be the ideal for my coffee and basket to give the best taste. It's definitely been worth optimizing.
Be interesting to see if the goal posts move much on another type or roast duration of coffee.

Another foray into London Town and another miserable coffee experience in terms of cost and quality.
This time my cappuccino was made with water so scalding hot it was difficult to discern much coffee flavour. And as for his attempt at "microfoam", well micro it wasn't - let's just say it looked like it came out of a bottle of Matey Bubble Bath.
That will teach me not to run out of coffee at home again I hope ...

That's the problem when you get good at making coffee at home, it's needs to be at least as good when out and to be honest it should be better if it's being made by a professional. I had a rank Americano in town yesterday too, so I get where you're coming from Jules. I mean, black Americano . . . how hard is that?

That's just woeful Tim. It's so short sighted aswell - yes they may have got my money *once* but these guys depend on repeat business from local workers. If I was working nearby I wouldn't dream of returning!
On a brighter note I picked up a fab new coffee that was ground for Aeropress duties. It's a Honduras coffee from Climpson and Sons which has a really moreish, chewy raisin and yellow fruit feel. Delicious!

I mean, black Americano . . . how hard is that? You'd think, but some places get it horribly wrong, notably expensive hotels. I still think Costa make the most consistent Americano while Starbucks are iffy but the one next to my Sainsburys are better than average.

I'll buy the Wilfa when circumstances allow. Looks ideal. Nice, a perfect entry into grinding your own beans. One thing though Jules, I take it you pretty much always use an Aeropress? If that's so this is a perfect fit. Hi Tim - I'm thinking a grinder will be a good birthday present to self this year. Is the Wilfa easy / appropriate to use if just grinding for a single 11.5g shot of Aeropress coffee? Cheers

That's pretty much all I ever do Jules, grind for a single dose. Probably make a large pot once a week, but the rest of the time it's just one cup in the AP or Moka mostly - since having the Niche I tend to use the AP a lot more whereas before it was mostly the Moka pot, buy it varies a lot!
It does have a hopper you can fill with beans and time dispense, but I never did that either, I prefer to keep my beans in an airtight container out of the light. So my routine is the same for the Niche as it was with the Wilfa, measure and grind enough for one cup of coffee each time. So can't see it being any different if that's what you want to do, 11.5 is lower than I'd go, around 14 for the AP and 17 in the Moka, but that's neither here nor there.
Some experimentation is needed regarding grind size, as the suggested grind for the AP on the Wilfa was too coarse for me and I liked it a little finer, but that's all taste dependant and the bean too.
It's a very simple grinder to use, much easier than the Niche actually.

Excellent, thanks Tim. I've got a decent vacuum canister for beans and will just grind what I need. I also like a fairly fine grind for the AP.

Roasted some more of the decaf beans. But darker this time. I'd forgotten my favourite milk jug at daughter's, having taken it over there to make Cappuccinos. Got it back. Much better micro foam with the smaller jug and low single shot volumes. This is the last of the Grounded Dorset caf coffee beans. 8 sec pre-infusion, 19 sec shot pull. Nice morning cuppa.
