Yeah, I always read the negative reviews first🙂 Faffy with grind size / hard to get crema. Faffy procedure. My thumbs ached just watching the video😂 Wonder how many cups before the seals go? Perhaps if I was camping / backpacking.. Then as you say, the cleaning😱

I discovered by accident that giving the coffee much more steep time improves its flavour no end. I shall allow it to drip through at its own pace in future, so the plunge just gets the last dregs from it.

Think the man on Youtube goes for 4 minutes Not good if you want a cup now !
The boss has thrown too many variables at our Aeropressing I bought the cloth filter and the coffee ran through Their advice was to ground finer
Boss buys a cheap grinder and multiple different coffee brands
No idea where we are now Decent cup every time though

I still think the metal filter that Jules sent me is the best of them all. Makes a great coffee, allows only a small drip-through, very easy to wash under the tap for the next time.

Reminds me to try the fine ground on our, not as good as yours, metal filter

Running out of ready roasted😱 I still have that huge bag of Costa Rican Black hog.. A bit of roasting Starting point Around 10 mins in, first crack heard. This would be very light roast. Another 5 or so mins, almost done Done chaff blown away. Outside with a small pair of bellows works well. Cooling. Still a light roast.. 1 - 4 days to degass.

Left to degass 1 day (in a tight sealed bag). They say 1 to 4 days is best. Some say 2 - 12 days.. It is the best coffee I've ever made.. Lighter roast ala James Hoffman Not sure I can go back to ready roasted now! Good thing is, I've got kilos of the green beans!

Fantastic, didn't know we had a home roaster here. I'm impressed, always wanted to try it ethiopian style just in a pan over heat. I might have to buy some green beans now

Fantastic, didn't know we had a home roaster here. I'm impressed, always wanted to try it ethiopian style just in a pan over heat. I might have to buy some green beans now I'm a relative newbie to this. This is the first time I got a nice consistent result. Slow and steady on low heat wins the day. Constant agitation essential. Bit like making gunpowder faster than you should (BBC TV series Taboo). Wife who doesn't normal like coffee said it was very flavoursome and mild. She got none of the burnt / over done taste that she dislikes with typical Italian espresso roasts. The puck is beautifully dry directly after extraction too.. Forgot to say. The smell directly after grinding is divine!

It's been interesting following the degassing / maturation process of this small batch of home roasted coffee.
It's definitely evolved a stronger coffee taste, day by day.
It was quite pale to start with, but very alluring with lighter flavours.
It's now more full on. Still delicious, but in a different way.
I was thinking my next batch should be a slightly darker roast, now I'm not so sure. It evolves.. I could just wait the optimum number of days before starting to use, but where would the fun be in that? 🙂

I've just ordered the Aeropress own brand metal filter. It's sold out on Amazon currently so I ordered direct from Aeropress for £17.99 delivered. www.aeropress.co.uk/products/aeropress-stainless-steel-reusable-filterMy frustration with the hemp filter is 2 fold. No two cups of coffee are effectively the same due to the build up of oils that won't wash out under the tap, so the taste gradually gets less bright and more stale. You need to boil it in water at least once a week - after this the difference is chalk and cheese. Secondly, the amount of energy wasted using hot water really makes a mockery of the hemp eco credentials, especially with energy costs as they are. It will be interesting to see if the metal filter preserves enough clarity for my taste, compared to paper and hemp filters.

Whether it's a keeper or not remains to be seen but am looking forward to consistency at least.
The Aeropress made filter is sensibly priced and seems to be a good design compromise from what I can see - you can get metal filters with even more, smaller holes, but can be rather fragile and prone to bending. I do have my eye on one to try at some point though ...

What gear are you using nowadays? I haven't made espresso for years and I'm (still) not grinding my own beans so consistency really should be achievable with Aeropress, as I have a completely set routine that I stick to. The new filter should arrive tomorrow!

By being slack with the brewing time, I seem to have achieved better consistency with my Aeropress.
I had got it wrong and thought longer times led to greater bitterness. Counter-intuitively, longer times lead to richer flavour and less bitterness. It's storage time in a non air-tight container that leads to bitterness. Duh!
