A question for anyone using a metal filter with Aeropress. What's your clean up routine? How do you eject the used grounds without having to fish your filter out of the bin? Unscrew the plastic end, run under tap water. Pick the metal filter off the end, run under tap water. Eject the coffee grounds into the bin, run the end under tap water. Job done.

We have a new Starbucks adjoining our local Sainsburys. It's large, quite plush and nicely appointed. It could have become our nearest coffee house.
There's one big downside, though. It's a Starbucks. That means the coffee is vile.

So when you unscrew the plastic end, the grounds and filter always stay attached to the tube ready for ejection?

So when you unscrew the plastic end, the grounds and filter always stay attached to the tube ready for ejection? Yes, always. Unscrew the end with it slightly tipped up and everything stays put.

Cool. I'm going to try a metal filter one last time to see if I can get on with it... Going to look for a fine mesh one with minimal coffee sediment left.

Tasty element to some of my birthday presents for us to sampleFirst up something new to Silver Oak Coffee of Ely. My first Vietnamese coffee I think. Very tasty indeed. Silver Oak Coffee is my local, I often have a cuppa at their rig on the market square! The Vietnamese coffee was special. I’m now trying “Finca las Mercedes’ la Florida “ from Colombia. Lovely coffees and Bruce & Sue are great people. As per coincidence, they also convinced me to buy the Aeropress. It allows me to make a smoother, more tasty coffee, compared to the stove pot. I wonder, do you just pour hot water from the kettle (at about 90 degrees) or do you let the water cool down to the recommended 80 degrees first? How long do you let the coffee sit before pressing through?I assume the hotter the water, the shorter you have to let it brew?

I pour the water just as the boiling settles down.
Stir and leave 45s to pressing.

I'm still using the Hoffman recipe. Hundreds of coffees later I can say it's 100% reliable and gets the best out of any coffee.

I'll have to try their Columbian - my favourite region for coffee.
I keep trying to find the ultimate example, a Columbian Holy Grail if you like ... I have been on the quest a good few years now but still haven't discovered it ...

I like Columbian Quinchia but haven't done a deep trawl for different brands.

I've just ordered a cloth filter for my Aeropress, made from organic cotton and hemp blend. Obviously something like this requires a bit of maintenance - washing and storing in fridge or freezer but I'm intrigued enough to try one as it should let more oils through than paper. Worth a shot at the price of £4 delivered - theclothfilter.coffee/shop/p/aeropress

Well it works!
Just made my first cup - not going to judge it on that as think my water was a bit too hot. Having to wash it afterwards and put it in a sealed pot in the freezer feels like a pain right now, but will become part of the routine I guess.
To answer your question Martin, I haven't tried another metal filter yet. The reason I bought the cloth one is that supposedly it will let through more of the oils you want than a metal filter. I also like its eco credentials.
I should add that it didn't let any coffee grinds through that I could see, which is a bonus vs metal filters.

So onto my second cup. Water has had 90 secs since kettle boiled to cool to appropriate temperature. I note the coffee is very clean but full bodied. Maybe too clean? Don't know yet.
One thing I have noticed is how much more porous the cloth filter is. Because of this the coffee starts dripping through a bit too much before I can get my plunger in there to create a vacuum. I'm going to try the inverted method next so this issue is taken out of the equation. Also important to plunge more slowly than usual to get the same extraction I think or the brewed coffee will run through too quickly.
I'll have one more cup today to try this.

So my final cup today using the inverted method was the best. It was my usual 2 minutes brewing in the chamber, no stirring. I found this to have the most depth of flavour and I wasn't slightly distracted by how clean it tasted as previously.
Just one thought on eco credentials though. It's good not to be using paper but I'm using hot water every time to clean this thing! If I'm doing that roughly 28 times a week, 112 times a month, that must somewhat detract from its eco cred ...
