I put a scoop of ground coffee into the machine, twizzle the handle and press a button. Fresh coffee quicker than it would take me to find the jar and boil a kettle! Instant coffee is the work of the devil I tell you!

I don't buy instant myself but judging by the dreck masquerading as fresh coffee that arrived this morning, I should keep some in.
I like the Waitrose Colombian Instant Microground Coffee which my mum gets, it's perfectly tolerable.

Our Delonghi coffee machine seems terminal Throwing the circuit breaker off
What recommendations please ? Not filter, not pods or capsules or Aeropress - I am told by the management
Will also be having a look at the Delonghi to see if I can spot the problem

In that case you are probably looking at a 'Bean to cup' machine.

So an inexpensive cappuccino / espresso maker. You want the same kind of thing again?
I hated cleaning those things when I had one ...

Probably I thought an Aeropress would have done but the boss says too messy after seeing son in law's Found one at a reasonable price on Ebay that we can collect I can then take my time to try and repair this one

Aeropress is a doddle to use and to clean afterwards. You just eject the 'cake' of coffee straight into the bin and rinse it. Job done, 20s tops.

You can't compare the De Longhi and Aeropress as they do totally different jobs.

Looking at one that seems virtually unused for a lot less. A lot of this kit is bought and never used

Not same result.
Your machine will make you an espresso after which you use the steam wand to froth up milk for cappuccino or latte.
An Aeropress will make any kind of ground coffee. Some people will use it for espresso and then froth milk elsewhere for cappuccino however technically it can't make 'true' espresso as it can't work at the required pressure. Google for more details.

The boss showed me the frother once and I couldn't be bothered to do it. She is currently using a cafetiere That is messy I will probably do without coffee for now at least

Both cafetiere and Aeropress make good coffee. The cafetiere makes a mug full while the Aeropress makes an espresso which you then top up. The result is not that different and I don't mind making coffee either way.
The Aeropress is easier to clean afterwards.

Aeropress isn't messy and is the best solution for making coffee for one.
However it isn't likely to satisfy someone used to 'proper' cappuccino.
