Don’t buy a metal filter Martin - I will send you one I bought recently. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BM52C76/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I used it once only but don’t like the fact that the grinds stick to it, so that means grinds going down the sink and I just don’t like the mess it creates. The grinds from the filter paper just deposit themselves onto a piece of kitchen towel that I put in the bin - much more satisfactory for me.

I'll give it a try, Jules. I wash the Aeropress bits under the tap so washing the filter would be no problem. However, I do plunge the grind, complete with paper filter, straight into the bin, which means I'll have to change my habit anyway.

I know some of you, like me, resort to the odd cup of instant. Sainsbury's currently has Gold Blend Barista Style 180g cans on sale at £5.00 down from £7.00. It's still probably the best bog-standard instant I've tasted, and it's quite suitable for adulterating with a shot of vanilla or hazelnut syrup.

Don't mention the V word please Paul. I had that stuff with my daily cappuccinos but gave it up when told my blood sugar was too high! Not touched it since.

Yes I always wash my gear immediately in the sink, but just didn't like handling the filter caked in grinds - the paper filter is so much easier to deal with. Anyway, see what you think - I expect to hear a full 'blind tasting' report to see whether the metal filter is like a 'component upgrade' and has lifted many veils from the taste of your coffee Martin!

LOL!
Good shout on the vanilla, Paul. I'm going to look for some (perhaps not a full litre).

I'm just trying the Caffe Concetto Superfine metal filter in my Aeropress this morning, kindly sent to me by Jules. It's the first time I've used a metal filter. My first observation is that there is much higher resistance to plunging compared with a paper filter - it makes me worry for my mug! Second observation, the coffee taste is great.
I'm not sure what it is that makes the use of a metal filter impact the taste of the coffee, but first impressions are good!

Reduced binding of volatile organics. Mind, that includes any carcinogens! There was a study some years back comparing metal / polymer filters with paper ones which showed lower concentrations of potential carcinogens in coffee filtered through paper.

Really? That's excellent information, Pete. Since I am a recovered cancer patient, trust me when I say I will do anything to avoid getting it again.

'An independent coffee chain said it has seen sales fall by £250,000 since it banned single use cups last summer ...' read on here.

How many coffees do you have each day?
I have four, spread through the day. Very occasionally I have one in the evening but for obvious reasons I try to avoid this!

I have a good tip for you Aeropress punters! When you need a new rubber plunger seal, buy one of these. So far I have found it to be *masses* better than the original, with a stronger material that maintains a tighter seal, giving you more control over your plunge ...

I think your original one must have been dodgy Jules.
