I'm not sure about this Columbian I've started today after a couple of brews.
Difficult to say why exactly but something isn't quite right. It doesn't taste especially 'pure' to me - it's a bit too viscous and has this slightly earthy quality to it which I'm finding unappealing. Certainly not the 'silky' finish I was expecting.

Interesting. The Quinchia Columbian coffee from Sainsburys is a nice one that I keep going back to. This review gives it 7/10 but I'd push that to 8/10 as I find it smooth rather than bitter.

Well, I'm just enjoying a cup of Espresso Cargado from Gepa at the moment. It's an Arabica Robusta blend from the Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union, apparently. Gepa is a fair-trade brand here in Germany and retails through various fair-trade outlets including Oxfam. It is the best of the fair-trade, pre-ground espresso coffees we've found so far and stands up well against the more 'main-stream' brands too. Illy always used to be my go-to. In the UK I tend to grind the Machu Pichu blend of beans from Café Direct to expresso fineness. www.gepa-shop.de/espresso-cargado-gemahlen-250.html

This is interesting. Tried a different Aeropress 'recipe' this morning with my Columbian coffee.
Still using inverted method, I went for a shorter 1 minute brew time. Then tried a really slow extraction (patience required!) so total brew time would have been under 2 minutes total.
With this particular coffee it's a definite improvement as I've got a much cleaner flavour without the earthiness I was finding earlier.

I do a 45s brew time, as recommended somewhere I read!

1 minute seems to be optimal for my Columbian - it has shown me that you need to experiment with brew times for different types of coffee to get the best out of them!

An update on my coffee purchases. The best coffee I have tried so far with my Aeropress is the Brazil Sao Marco from Rave Coffee. When it was at its freshest, it had a wonderful aroma and notes of apples with red fruits, just gorgeous! Today I received a sample pack from North Star Roasters in Leeds. It is superbly presented as you can see, with some very interesting notes about the producers from these single origin coffees. I have opened the Brazil Fazenda Rainha Da Paz to compare with the Rave coffee but it isn't quite in the same league. I just loved the complexity of the Rave coffee - this one is very pleasant and easy drinking, but doesn't fall into that 'special' category which would make me want to purchase again. Let's see how the other two in the box work out!

The shop we buy the Espresso Cargardo from is awaiting stock so we bought two alternative, fair-trade espressos to try. At the moment we're on Bamenda, a 100% Arabica from Camaroon - I really cannot recommend it though; it really lacks depth.

Now moved onto the Columbian coffee from North Star.
It's lovely, there's a light toffee / butterscotch note which gives it a delicate sweetness. Very nice!

And now on the El Salvador from North Star - another top quality coffee, beautifully balanced, quite light with a lovely sweetness.

Not overwhelmed with any of my Coffee Officina purchases.
I’ve gone back to Rave Coffee for my next order - theirs has been the best I have tried so far.
I chose a couple of interesting looking single origins - Guatemala Alta Vista and El Salvador Los Nogales Double Soaked!

Yup, brew times, method (if using an Aeropress) and water temps all make a difference. Wait till you get a grinder and add grind size into the mix, that'll start the whole merry-go-round again!
In case you missed it over on AoS Jules, those Columbian whole beans Justers recommended are pretty good, not done a Pepsi challenge with the Tesco Supremo yet though. I think they are from the same area, Huila.
