I'm sure I can get much better results.
Main issue is that the coffee I have at the moment is coarse ground, so water just passes through it too quickly before I can get the plunger on.

Don't forget, Jules, the Aeropress probably needs a couple of weeks to burn in even though it's a purely analogue device.

Naturellement!
Talking of burning in, I'm already liking giving the coffee 30 secs of 'bloom' before filling up ...

Have you tried the "inverted" method, as per that video, Jules? It will stop the seepage problems you're getting due to using too coarse a grind.

Are you using a paper or gauze filter? I still use paper and very little drips through after stirring, until I apply the plunge. I've got around 345 more paper filters to get through ...

Not yet but I'll try that one tomorrow morning Paul ... I'm not sure the coffee I have bought is top notch, even though I'm not tasting at its best, so looking forward to buying some fresh grind locally.

I bought a second packet of papers and it should last another year!
I'm very much liking the Café Direct ground coffees. Sainsbury Quinchia remains a favourite, too.

Using the inverted method made a *huge* difference Paul.
I ended up with a completely smooth coffee without any bitterness at all. Now I want another!
I will stick to this method whilst using up my coarse grind but I actually think it makes sense with any grind ...

Marie bought me a 15 bar machine recently. It doesn't grind the coffee though. The type you load the ground coffee into press it a bit then lock it into the machine and it channels each side into two cups or both into one. It comes out with that lovely lighter edge. Getting the pressing just right gives that. It also has a steamer / frother. I'm a sucker for Cappuccino. With a bit of practise I can now make a Café Nero tasting 1 or 2 shot cuppa. They sell their ground coffee too. They have a pressing machine - might have to get one of those I can even get a nice cup of decaf. Favourites are Taylors of Harrogate roast 4, Anorak Sakura spring (Japanese) and even good old Coop Fairtrade isn't bad. Agree with Martin on the Sainsbury's too.

I can't believe I paid 9 quid for 250g of Kenyan coffee at a local place yesterday!! Even with delivery it's cheaper to order online from a good roaster.
I also think they ground it too coarse. Tried it yesterday with a 3 min brew time. Horrible, bitter, nothing to like. Today brewed for 4 mins, huge improvement. Still not really my thing, but drinkable at least. Will order some South American coffees as I know they will be to my taste.

I'm still impressed with the Cafe Direct Peru ground coffee I bought.

I tried making a coffee using the inverted method this morning. It tastes exactly the same!
Considering that it's more fiddly and prone to accidents (higher CofG), I shall continue using my Aeropress the right way round in future.

That was my conclusion when I tried it a couple years ago.

I'm entirely converted to the inverted method - I find it just as easy and don't want any of my coffee dripping through until fully brewed ...

I've just ordered a selection of coffees from the York Emporium. Very friendly and helpful service from them. I went for the 'chocolatey' selection which should be perfect for my taste. You get 5 x 200g which should keep me busy for a while; it will arrive medium ground for the Aeropress. yorkemporium.co.uk/products/chocolatey-coffee-selection-pack

Interesting site, Jules. I'm tempted by the Aeropress selection as they're the types of coffee I like.

Can't wait for my coffees to arrive.
Must say I am loving the Aeropress. What a cool invention. So far not missing my broken-down Gaggia. If I have the urge for a cappuccino I will buy one at local cafes now and again.
I definitely don't miss cleaning the Gaggia, especially the milk wand. The Aeropress takes about a minute to clean, what joy ...

Been enjoying the whole bean version of that for a few years now, it's delicious Very surprised to read that folk are reporting there's no taste difference between coffee made by the inverted method, it's very clear to me and I haven't made coffee in an Aeropress 'the right way up' (who says which is the right way?) for many years now, it's clearly different - are you doing it right? Freshly ground beans (I use 18g in a normal sized mug) Water left for 1 minute after boiling (fresh filtered water) Fill half way and let bloom for about 20 seconds Top up with water and stir, let brew for at least 1 minute Slow pressure into cup, taking 20 - 30s for the extraction Stop at the hiss or just before Top up with water to taste, I like a fairly robust brew Very, very simple to do, not fiddly at all and I've never had 'an accident'.
Guys - if you want to enjoy the very best tasting coffee in an Aeropress, stop dicking around buying ground coffee, it's a fools errand as you're drinking stale coffee. It's all in the grind . . . just sayin'

I'd love to, Tim, but there are limitations to what I can do at work and that's where I keep my Aeropress.
Fresh filtered water and grinding my own are just not possible.
Saying that, I really enjoy drinking coffee this way and hate running out!
