I get through a bag of ground coffee in a week so it doesn't have time to go stale. I've noticed that some brands go off quicker than others.

Agreed but how long since it was roasted, sat on the shelf etc....Like lots of things, you won't know unless you try.... Give an online supplier a go, loads of choice and as fresh as it can be. I reckon if you do you won't go back to pre-packed supermarket coffee.

It may be ok, but it will be far from the best you could achieve by grinding it yourself. Trust me, I can taste a clear difference between pre ground and fresh ground. I experimented with the same make of coffee. If you can’t taste a difference, then either your taste buds or up your preparation method are not where they need to be. As with audiophile fuses, it is something you need to try. Fresh ground coffee really makes a difference. After the coffee has been ground, it starts to lose some flavour very quickly.

I don't doubt it for a moment and a grinder is definitely on my shopping list.

You're just waiting for Amazon to start selling the model that you can operate with your phone from your car on the way to work, aren't you?!

Using the age old technique of boiling the water on the exhaust.

No, not needed a back-up in the four years I have owned the Gaggia. Now I'm stuffed though - I need to replace the 'shower disc' but can't remove the screw it's held in with - even after buying a stubby screwdriver to give me proper access I cannot get the bugger out! I might have to send it to Gaggia which I'm sure won't be cheap. Very annoying as the spare part is only 7 quid. It's a common problem - linkIf the screen is off, see if you can get a pair of mole grips on the screw to get some better leverage. Try tightening it up slightly first though. Thanks for that. I've tried everything I can. Thought I had it last night but ended up unscrewing the piece that the screw is attached to. Nearly took my thumb off trying to get it out! I may end up having to buy this part, the screw and the shower disc. What a drag. Drinking instant this morning.

This instant coffee lark is dangerous! Because it's 'instant' I'm drinking way too much of it during the day ...

I bought the stainless steel filter separately, although there were so many free paper filters with the Aero that I haven't used it yet. [EDIT[ It was this one that I bought. It was £13.00 when I bought it.

Since my cappuccino machine broke down I have changed my diet and part of that means no more high sugar content syrup in coffee; The syrup was so tied into my enjoyment of the cappuccino that I'm not bothered about fixing the machine at the moment and am still on the instant.

Instant apparently not that bad as Azuro came 2nd on BBC 'test' this morning. 'Nespresso' clone came first, real Nespresso third.
I'm still sticking with real Nespresso - the clone they sell in Sainsburys tasted pretty awful to me when I tried it.

I've been using Nescafe Gold Blend Barista Style, and stocking up on it while Sainsbury's are selling it at £5.00 a can instead of £7.00

Not espresso, but Sainsbury's are currently selling 180g tins of Nescafe Gold Blend Barista Style Instant Coffee for £4.50 instead of £7.00. I think it's the best 'ordinary' instant you can buy.

I bought two bags of ground coffee in Carrefour in Belgium (own brand), Peru and Colombia. Both were excellent. I think there are a few branches here in the UK?

I made an irreversible move recently. Having been an instant Azera drinker and Nespresso too I dug out our old Bialetti Moka Express (2 and 4 cup versions). Even with pre-ground coffee the Bialetti made Azera taste like dishwater and even Nespresso wasn't too good it's still ok. I then bought a burr type (not blade) electric grinder and source beans from Rave Coffee online so I know the beans are very freshly roasted. There's no going back....

I made the mistake of buying some Illy instant coffee - it was on offer at Waitrose and I can see why. Really bland - smooth but lacking in flavour. Waitrose actually do a really good own brand microground Columbian instant - best I have tried, I wish I'd bought some of that instead!!
