Can you recommend a small grinder to do a mug-at-a-time? A Porlex, I have a Porlex Tall, but the mini may do. Very well regarded and great for travel, I take mine on trips with whole beans and the aeropress. Don't buy a Hario Glass Grinder, horrible to use and if you drop it, it breaks . . . easily. My friend bought one and I've used it, horrible to hold and grind with. I've got three grinders, 2 Zassenhaus (also very good make), but they are quite expensive. The Porlex to be honest is just what you need. Do some Googling on price as as a lot of online coffee specialists often have prices better than Amazon. knowyourgrinder.com/porlex-mini-stainless-steel-hand-grinder-mill-review/Porlex

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It's been fifteen minutes since my last coffee, and it was instant.

I always keep some instant around for guests, and when I'm feeling lazy, like today. I used to buy Carte Noir but recently I've been converted to Nescafe Gold Blend Barista Style which, for instant coffee, is very drinkable. The only problem is that for some reason it tastes awful (to me, at least) with sweeteners, so I have to limit myself.
Two heaped spoonfuls of coffee, two heaped spoonfuls of Coffee Mate, two spoonfuls of Demerara sugar makes a quite decent mug-full.

Coffee Mate? I've not seen that since about 1977!

It's the secret to drinkable instant coffee, Jules. It gives the coffee more "body" than using milk.

I keep Gold Blend Barista or Kenco Millicano around for emergencies, but since buying my Aeropress I've been mainly on the real stuff. The mistake you're making, Paul, is with the ancillaries. Dispense with that awful milk stuff and sugar and you'll taste it better

Just remember though Martin, if you are grinding whole beans in a hand grinder, you must put them in the right way round. Whole coffee beans are directional.

OMG - a metal disc dropped out of my espresso machine today! Think I can fix it but will be without coffee for a few days ...

Can you recommend a small grinder to do a mug-at-a-time? I've had a Feld2 hand grinder (made by knock) for a couple of months now - I'm very impressed, seems well engineered and very adjustable, I'd recommend it. Cheers. Bill

No, not needed a back-up in the four years I have owned the Gaggia. Now I'm stuffed though - I need to replace the 'shower disc' but can't remove the screw it's held in with - even after buying a stubby screwdriver to give me proper access I cannot get the bugger out! I might have to send it to Gaggia which I'm sure won't be cheap. Very annoying as the spare part is only 7 quid.

It's probably too late now, but perhaps tomorrow you could get an Aeropress overnighted from Amazon, or similar. You won't regret it.

It's a common problem - linkIf the screen is off, see if you can get a pair of mole grips on the screw to get some better leverage. Try tightening it up slightly first though.

Ideally you'd have your own grinder but you really should give one of the online suppliers a try.
I use Rave and particularly like their Columbian Suarez. I buy the beans but you can choose to have it ground although it's recommended to use it more quickly if you go that route. Order Sunday, they'll roast Monday and on your doorstep Wednesday. They roast every day by the way....
