Looks like I will be going to the US sometime soon.
All that time without music will be painful
This is the only time I would need a portable music playing device. . Probably headphones too
What's a sensible option ?

Are you just after something to play on the flight or something more Mike?

Would be on the plane both times and maybe a few hours out there over a few days
Sound quality 'good enough' whatever that is
This might be the only time I ever use it

Yep, get a Sansa Clip+ You can be a real cheapskate and get a refurb from Amazon for 23 quid. Get a 32 or 64 gig micro SD card and stuff it full of mp3 files burned from your CDs at 320 kbps. Also, treat yourself to a half decent pair of phones. The card will give you plenty enough music not to have to listen to the same thing twice and at good enough quality so as not to make you wince. That's exactly what I've just done for myself for our forthcoming trip to the States, now that my old player has carked it. I got one with a bit more internal memory than the one I linked to above, but the refurb works just fine.

Thanks guys sounds perfect I knew nothing and having the "buy this" from everyone makes it so easy. Ok. Next question. I need to RIP music I've got some odd outputs on my Isis can they go straight in ? This is the clearest I can find of the back www.6moons.com/audioreviews/rega2/1.html

You're better off using a PC and Exact Audio Copy with the LAME mp3 encoder installed. Honestly, it's a lot easier than trying to take output from a CD player and running it through an ADC.

If you don't already have the files and you haven't used EAC before, I'd be using Window Media Player, Mike - you're not looking for perfection here. Select your resolution of choice and folder to save it to (this can be on your micro SD card so no further transferring necessary), set media player to rip when a disc is inserted and 'eject when finished' and just feed the discs into your pc.

Ah yes Chris. EAC although excellent needs very clear instructions. I got lost reading matey's spiel Window Media player it is. If your Gran can do it I'm game How many CDs roughly on 2 or 8G ? Do I record direct to the Sansa ? (please, nice and simple) One day I need to get into EAC. Perhaps one of or uber geeky members might post a thorough 'how to' Not thinking of anyone especially (*MARTIN*)

Hah - sorry, always going for the technically best solution. Chris is right, Windows Media Player makes it very easy to rip CDs and will even see the Sansa and load them right in for you. Not quite as good mp3 encoding, but doubt you'll notice if you set it for at least 256k encoding (I prefer 320k).

Oh, and don't forget Amazon Music Player. It will offer you pre-ripped files of pretty much every disc you have ever bought from them. A superb ready-made library (and fab for vinyl purchases which are a bugger to rip).

The figures suggested in the Win. media player settings say 144MB for 320k and 115 for 256k. Get yourself a memory card though Mike - you'll want plenty of variety on a long flight!

Thanks Guys
If the Sansa has 8G isn't that enough, how many albums ?
Most of my Amazon purchases are 2nd hand so unlikely to be available as RIPS
EAC for me one day

As a guideline, I have 137 albums in just over 8GB space, mostly encoded at 256k (Amazon) or 320k (myself).
