That's a superbly specific maximum. I wish I could be as definite as you on these things.

I feel my Videoton receiver is letting the side down now and I'm still bidding on the Yamaha 359

Think you'll notice a big difference. How much are you going up to?

Though, as I was born 18 months after decimalisation, I really shouldn't be able to understand all that outdated malarkey.

Decimalisation ? Ah yes, I remember it well. (to quote the song).
You wait till they decimalise the time system.

What should I focus on next? Better turntable? Better Cartridge? Rear speakers? Sub? Better cassette deck? DAB tuner? Better inter-connects? Better speaker cable?

I haven't heard those Sony speakers or even seen them. It's hard to get an idea of size from pics and I'm guessing at their quality. I also don't know what space you have for speakers.
Assuming you can fit in either a pair of speakers on stands or a pair of floorstanding speakers, I'd probably tackle these first. Speakers local to you on either EBay or Gumtree that are collection only will probably go for far less than stuff that the seller will post. You also remove any risk of transit damage when collecting, so you win twice.

I'd be spending a few quid on some decent speaker stands and then paying some attention to getting them sitting in the best possible position in the room. If they're simply plonked in a random spot, they're very unlikely to be optimally placed. Get the best from what you already own before spending any more cash on new components, that's my advice. You never know, it may give you all you require, allowing you to save your cash for music - much more interesting than bits of hifi!

They arena bit bigger than I'd expected which is good. They don't look badly constructed either. If you had someone near you who could let you hear their setup, or better still bring their speakers round, mint would answer a lot of questions for you,
I'd put money in you being able to significantly better the Sonys for £50 or less but I also agree with Chris that positioning and stands are important, as is speaker cable. Of course it depends on what space you have available to place your speakers and whether you are willing to live with some intrusion into your room.
Some small floorstanders such as the Rega Ela will work close to a wall and won't intrude at all. I've bought Elas collection only before for £50 and I think they are incredibly musical speakers.
If you're on a really tight budget and you like your Sonys, try picking up a pair of speaker stands at a boot sale for peanuts and ask on forums if anyone has any spare unused speaker cable you can have for the cost of postage,
