Inspired by the pages of Audio Standard, I have decided to upgrade my aged set up. So do I start at the front, the back or the middle? Which one will give me the most improvement for the least cash?

Well Moth, if you want to do it bit by bit, it rather depends on what you already use. The components you list in your profile include what appears to be CD laser unit as speakers. That might be a good place to start.

Gosh that is hard one to answer I suggest get a feel for what you want first. The best way to do this is hear as many systems you can with your favorite music. I notice you listen to a lot of prog for me I would want floorstanders that do good bass and have a great mid to do this type of music justice (but a lot of people as long they get a sense of bass rather than real bass this is not a issue, so that is something you need to figure out for yourself) The room you going to be playing in will count. A Small room might struggle with large speakers. Most people do not have the luxury of a dedicated music room so space will be another issue. Keeping costs down two ways to go DIY or Second hand but I think you need to get a handle of what you want and work with in the limits of your budget and perhaps room.

I think the real problem with upgrading in stages is that you might pick something (e.g. speakers) that works well with your other components, but then if you upgrade them, you may find it doesn't work so well with the new ones ! I'm a 'source first' believer so in your position I'd probably go for a decent CD player first (assuming CD's is what you want). As ChrisB says, your listed components don't seem right (Isn't the Pioneer 1060 a car stereo ) - maybe we can help more if you clarify them.

I always say go s/h with whatever you buy - preferably from forum ads. Much better vfm. I would say ask about as well as loads of folk have stuff lying about they might let you play with if you ask nicely.... theaudiostandard.net/thread/590/unused-gear-sitting

The room I am going to use the set up in is 5.2metres by 3.05 metres. It doubles as my studio and office, but does not contain any other sound equipment.

My turntable a Dual 430 My CD player is a Sharp DX3 My speakers are Hitachi and my tuner amp is an Erosito. I'll post some photos if I can work out how, I can't seem to find the button for posting them on here?

A good size room My room is a bit less in length and wider in width but not by much and I get Open Baffles in mine so you got a lot of variation from big Open baffles to small stand mounts From the descriptions you given of your gear it is very hard to advise as none of us are really clear what you already have (pictures might help). Perhaps a new system might be the best bet. I still think it is very important to get a sense of what sound you like before you purchase. You said budget is limited What are talking about £100 or ? Can you afford to gradually build. It is important not to over stretch your resources so you need to be realistic about costs and performance

Which source though? Records, CD's Radio or tapes?
