This is what Hi-fi world said in 1998.
Denon DCD-635 £180 Feb 98 Rhythmically slick and dynamic, the Denon errs to the cool side of neutral.
As long as the case colour is more important than sound quality you are seriously limiting the choices available at your price point.

What I would do is
A) Make myself a cup of tea.
B) Sit at the computer with Ebay UK, select sound and vision, CD players, price lowest first.
C) Trawl through the listings until you find one the right colour.
D) Cut and paste the name and model number into Google and see if there are any reviews.
E) Read the reviews and see if they sound like what you want.
Works for me.

As it happens I've a Denon 510 in champagne you could have; it's three years old, would you like to make me an offer for it? What I said:-

£15:00 plus P&P, I suspect you would have like me to offer more but look at this:- www.ebay.de/myb/Summary?MyEbay&gbh=1
What the Major said:-
Tell you what I'll do, I'll let you have the player for the same final price as that one goes for and pay for P&P myself.
Or you can have is now (post free) for £35:00? Which offer would the Standarzi advise me to take?

So I played the waiting game and hope to get the best price, after all it isn't as if I don't have a CD player at all.

The CD player on ebay went for £34:00. So I have paid that and a Denon 510 will soon be on its way to me. My first upgrade!

Looks like a bargain. I haven't had a Denon in many years but the ones I had were pretty good. FWIW I prefer any colour to black, especially when it comes to speakers.

I have managed to buy a pair of Sony SS-S3 Monitors for £10:00 too, so my next hunt is for a receiver.

Look at eBay, Google for info and reviews. Pay no more than you are willing to lose if it turns out to be rubbish. Cheers james.

Thanks to you all for some really useful advice that helped me arrive at the decision I have done. My next search is for a 7.1 receiver.

I'm really pretty clueless about surround sound other than general observations about makes. Strikes me you could do a lot worse than a Denon which would perhaps be visually similar to your CD. I have really liked the sound from Harman Kardon amps and I know they have made surround receivers. I'd imagine their family sound would transfer to their surround sound kit. Likewise NAD, who make some really fun amps. Others will know more than me, I'm sure.
I guess your decision to go for surround sound will mean looking for a speaker package to match at some time. Yo can pick up Eltax Liberty and JPW speaker sets for very little and both are good. Swimming against the hifi tide, I'd go for the Eltax Liberty. Build quality and sound are just lain silly for the price. They also look smart too.

There's an auction going on; on another forum, for a Yamaha 359.
It's currently under £18, what would you say should be the ceiling bid for one of those?
