It's Record Store Day again this Saturday and I've heard rather less about it this year than on previous years. I haven't really bothered about it for the last couple and, looking at the list of exclusive releases, I don't think I will be troubling the queues with my presence this year either. I expect that, as in the last couple of years, if you are willing to pay a hefty premium you will be able to get want you want without queuing - just take a look on Ebay within 20 seconds of the shops opening and you'll see all resellers will be listing all the goodies you might ever desire!

Not a lot there of interest, and I definitely don't want to buy 7" singles.

There's a couple of things I would like, so I'll be out there around 7am ish. Lot's of good music in-store too, 3 artists at my local and Emily B is at Pie & Vinyl in Southsea, so I'll be popping over to that. For me it's not just about records, its a music day too

Thanks for mentioning this - I've never looked at RSD before but found something I'll be getting up for!

The concept of Record Store Day is a good one, but as with all things, it is open to abuse. The organisers do try and clamp down on as much abuse as they can, but I'm guessing they can only do so much. I know last year, prices were fixed so that retailers couldn't sell for any excessive profit. I believe there isn't a limit this year, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out. Retailers also can't sell via ebay for the first so many weeks, and again, only for its RRP, again to stop them gaining excess profits (as most stock should be sold by then). I know quite a few retailers have been excluded this year for breaking rules last year, but as I say, wherever there is an unscrupulous dealer, there will be abuse.

That's life, some folks are greedy, others not . . . thankfully the others normally outweigh the less than honest. It's unfortunate so many dismiss RSD because of a this small minority and focus on the negative aspect, but there are a lot of great people supporting it and it has done a lot of good, certainly from my perception it has - and my glass is half full

. . . the 5.00am spoils Missed out on quite a few, Blackberry Smoke, Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division and the one I wanted the most, Nebraska (Springsteen) Still, very pleased I got Midlake, which I really wanted - I was number 30 in the queue.

You started queuing at 5am? Or is that when you reached the front of the line?!

I started queuing at 5.00am, the shop opened at 8.00am and I picked up my choices just before 9.00am. There were people at the front who had been there for over 24 hours!

Possibly, but maybe a little less mad than paying a few thousand pounds for a kettle lead? It's all about the music . . . .

As mad as Apple fanbois queuing up for a new phone!
Is the Nebraska a new mastering, Tim? I have an early vinyl pressing.

Remastered by Bob Ludwig, eh? I'd like to hear it! I'd like to own it! . . . ha ha. I think I fu**** up, but hey ho, win some, lose some - In fact I know I made an error of judgement, but I had to get the Tull as it's for my mate in China and that's the reason I went so early. The store in Wimborne operates what I think is a very fair system. The way it worked was I got there just before 5.00am and was number 30 in the line. A shop lady came down the line at 6.00am, took everyone's name then gave them a number and asked what their first choice was, so I said the Live Tull. Around 7.00 she came back with a sheet of everything available, with your name and number at the top. You marked on the sheet anything else you wanted after your first choice and handed it in. When the shop opened at 8.00, they go through the lists calling your number out and give you what is available from your selection in number order from your place in the line. I would have got Nebraska if it had been my number 1 choice, but as it was a secondary option, it had sold out by the time they got to my place in the queue. Hey ho, them's the breaks and at least I have it on CD and could buy the original on vinyl. With hindsight, I doubt the Tull would have sold out, so I should have put Nebraska as my #1 and taken a chance on the Tull, but I would have been pissed to have missed that, as my mate is a huge Tull fan and would have been more disappointed than I am about missing the Springsteen.

He's chuffed to bits, so that makes up for it. I think when it comes to Tull, you could class him as a super fan! Funny thing though, I still don't have a working record player and I keep buying all this vinyl

You're going to have to do something about that.
