April 2015 - Blake Mills - Heigh Ho (2014)This month's Album Choice is from Paul (pjdowns): I was first introduced to this album by the guys at Audio T in Reading this weekend and it has already gone to the top of my list of regular plays. Blake Mills is an American Singer/Songwriter who appears to be a little different from the usual boring sing-along with a guitar style. This is his second album, Heigh Ho, and is extremely well produced, with second to none musicianship and the tunes are quite excellent. It is also a great album to be used for testing what your Hifi can do WikipediaSpotify

Thanks for your choice, Paul. I've not heard of him so this is completely new to me. Listening to it on Spotify now.

I've listened a few times now and like what I hear. As John says, the sparse arrangements are compelling and attractive. It sounds like the kind of music that will sound particularly good on vinyl so I have ordered it in that format. A good 7/10 from me.

I got this a while ago, mainly because "everyone" was talking about Blake Mills. Then Clapton told Rolling Stone he considered Mills the "last guitarist I heard that I thought was phenomenal." Unfortunately I find that the album does nothing for me though, and I was really hoping to like it. That'll teach me not to audition it first I suppose.

Just finished listening to this album, some good tracks and I liked the production. A couple of the tracks never really "get going" enough and sound like long intros, but overall I'll give it 7/10.

Yes, I quite like this so I've given it a 6 after a listen or two. It strikes me that there's something a bit unusual/odd about it, but I'm buggered if I know what! More spins required.

Yep that sums up my thoughts exactly... There is something different which I like but I don't really know what or why

Playing the LP, the 2011 recording is vivid, dynamic and very much in-the-room. One of the best newly recorded albums of recent years and the music continues to grow on me too.

Enjoyable enough on first listen. It got a bit too busy for me in the middle of the song seven, almost discordant. Though I've just listened again to that one song and it didn't affect me the same way second time, so maybe I was imagining it. I think a 6 after one listen. May get a higher score when I listen again, later tonight or in the morning (if it's raining and I can't go out first thing for a bike ride).

This may be one of those records that you need to listen to a few times before making your mind up. I've listened to the first three or four songs a few times over the last two or three days. They seem to be growing on me.
