It would be a good starter machine for somebody, there is plenty of info about them and a lot of them out there, so parts/a parts donor are probably fairly easy to come by.

Akai 4000 - nice deck.
As for rum, Appleton is nice as is St Lucia Chairman's Reserve.

Not compared CD to tape I liked the sound of a valve G Revox compared to a solid state B I had the chance to buy a Revox G36 for £25. I turned it down, as I preferred my Ferrograph 632; better built and easier to thread, even if it didn't have such a wide FR as the Revox, or take 10.5" spools. These days those tapes I recorded on the Ferrograph on 7" tapes at 7.5 ips, I replay on a Nagra IV-S.

My name is Doc and I have a Revox addiction..... No seriously, I only have five and i could give them up anytime, honest I only record live music, make copy masters and play them back, so I don't know about recording from pre-recorded or broadcast sources, but in the past I used to record my albums when new and paly the tapes. This always sounded superb. I do have some 60s commercial releases mainly 4 track 7 1/2 ips and they still sound superb.

Laugh? Not at all. I'm all in favour of doing what feels best and I spend a lot of time listening to fairly humble kit.

I spend most of my listening time in front of a desktop JRiver/FLAC computer system playing via a Mini-T, HRT DAC and Celestion 5 speakers, which together sound way better than they should. Tis the music I enjoy, but I do marvel how good those bits of kit together sound near-field. Plug in different speakers and it all goes to shite, but the 5's love the Mini-T for some reason and the HRT DAC is superb. I do however have a very good PSU in the computer, which makes a big difference. That's a very cool system André, I could certainly live with it

O well that receiver did not last long. 2 hours playtime before the glass fuses kept blowing. I really cannot be bothered to fix the bloody thing, however i decided within the first 15 mins that my trusty old A&R 'A60' amp sounded better.

Right the two new A-77s both low speed one 1/4 track and one ex beeb machine fitted with a vari-speed that's a 1/2 track. These and the G36 have both gone over to Henry Durlat for a full service. Once these are done I have a PR99 which I got dirt, dirt cheap which I may fix up or break for spares for the others, see what Henry says about it when the others are done
