I'd love a blend of Sugden and Roksan sounds. Still searching but ever hopeful Roksan & Sugden. That's like comparing the working class to the middle class S.

Loads of candidates out there! - Sugden and Roksan are fairly extreme examples of their kind, imo. Lots of amps sit somewhere inbetween.

I do wish people would stop calling a passive control unit a 'preamp'. It's nothing of the sort!

I guess it might have more to do with ensuring it pops up on the biggest number of keyword searches. If the Alps pot is genuine, it's a pretty good price.

Yes I suspect you're right, Andrew.

The one that annoys me most is calling headphone amps 'head amps' .....grrrrr.

I do wish people would stop calling a passive control unit a 'preamp'. It's nothing of the sort! How about calling them preattenuators?

Yep, that'll fit!

But by that logic even an active preamp is only a preamp if the volume setting is at greater than unity gain.

I thought the name is only for passives?

Ah, OK. My point was that even a 'real' preamp doesn't always amplify, it just can if you want it to. So a preamp isn't a preamp when it is set to less than unity gain. Anyway - a little off topic here. That is a seriously gorgeous looking platform, Shane!

My Roksan is currently being borrowed to be used in another system. For the time being I'll be using my backup Quad 303 power amp. For the last 2 hours I've been listening to the Quad, driving a pair of Neat Critique II speakers. CD Player is the Linn Mimik, The control is just a single in/output volume pot in a box. Cables are NVA LS3 speaker wires. Interconnects are Klotz MC5000/Merlin Elgar. I can't really describe the sound I'm experiencing. At a guess, the best description is slightly ''chameleon like'' added with a touch of ''matter of fact''. If the album is white, the system performs out in white. The other album could be black, the system performs out in black. I'm still trying to adjust to the Quad 303's slightly laid back bass. But I'm liking its almost ''fit and forget'' kind of sound. To a degree I can understand why some studios use Quad amps! So, any album with a nasty/good recording, will come out like it is with this system. Neat have always made fantastic speakers. All the Neats I have heard are fast, dynamic and explicitly musical. Neat speakers sound just a tad like Royds, but more sober S.

Some more pics. Just gave the system a wee tidy. The Quad 303 is built like a brick shit-house. A true classic!! The £40 I paid for the volume box, I just can't really argue. It feels well made and looks of fairly good quality. S.

I do wish people would stop calling a passive control unit a 'preamp'. It's nothing of the sort! Isn't it called a preamp because it's fitted before an amplifier? It must be true, because it says so on Wiki - here

Is a loudspeaker still called a loudspeaker when you play your music quietly?
