Hehe, anathema in other words
Was said in jest anyway Martin, I'm yet to meet anyone in IT that uses Apple products [though they obviously do exist from your description of all the iPads at the SIMS conference!] usually reserved for the "arty" types IME.

You can use a USB keyboard on most laptops. PS2 would be better please ! USB to PS2 converters work but sometimes ignore characters. Frustrating but a good type

I'm waiting for the Surface Pro 4 in summer and will then ditch my powerful desktop workstation at work, going for a dock and retaining my 24" screen. It will finally be the point where portability meets power meets battery life. Do they have the IBM clicky keyboard effect yet ?

PS2 would be better please! You won't find a laptop with the obsolete PS/2 socket now and there are millions of USB keyboards out there, just find the one you want. Logitech do some nice inexpensive ones.

Stunning price for a really great bit of kit. You're safe in the knowledge that it should upgrade to W10 quite comfortably when you're ready.

Becoming like cars now then ! Yes, exactly so ! Unlike the MBP which even after 6 years heavy usage, scratched and dented with non working optical drive & the occasional overheating issues sold for 50% of its RRP

I loved my IBM Thinkpad, bomb proof.
I do however prefer my Macbook Pro. If I wanted a PC laptop though I'd definitely go for a Thinkpad again, I hope Lenovo have kept the build quality up since the IBM days.

I hope Lenovo have kept the build quality up since the IBM days. I had a T20 ? Not sure... Really cant remember it was so long ago but I think it was a T2- something ! Ancient regardless but build like a brick sh*thouse as you say. My new one is much lighter and less bulky (makes the MBP feel like a brick) but it doesn't feel cheap or like Lenovo have skimped at all. Much like the old one's there is a roll cage, magnesium bottom panel, carbon fibre impregnated chassis etc etc.
I find it hard to believe they couldn't find someone better to present that

I must say I am falling out of love with Apple a bit, they seem to be losing the plot and forgetting how to innovate.
I still enjoy using Mac mini and Macbook Pro but prices are beyond a joke now for new gear. I certainly won't automatically buy Mac again and will happily check out likes of IBM next time round.

Lenovo are great, my last three work laptops have been these and have never put a foot wrong.
I do like my own 17" Sony Vaio though, been a great and reliable bit of kit.

I would never buy a new machine anyway and no matter how many times I try other operating systems, they just don't stack up against MacOs. For me. I do agree that they have lost their mojo though. Just updating old stuff is not the sign of an innovative company. I was hoping that Ives would have the spark but he is a product design man not the oracle that Jobs managed to be. Even if that did mean seeing the bits of other people's work that were actually good and blending them into something new. I had a serious play with an iPad for the first time today and found it so much better than the Googly things I had tried that it is now on my list - second hand of course.

Not more Apple bashing but a little comparison... The last time I had an issue with an Apple product (faulty battery, they knew of the issue and were offering free replacements for those with affected S/N's) I went through the whole online diagnostic process before being told it would cost £100 to "repair", when queried they wanted to charge my card £20 just to speak to someone from technical support. A couple of days ago my ThinkPad started behaving a erratically, offering different boot options upon start up even though uncalled for & once logged in Windows would open dozens of search windows slowing the machine pretty much to a crawl. As it came with an "on site warranty" I emailed Lenovo this morning hoping to get it sorted, I received a reply literally 5 minutes later offering an engineer visit which naturally I accepted. 4 hours later I have a fully working machine again Engineer was here all of 10 minutes, a diagnostic test followed by the fitting of a new keyboard... No messing. Now that's quality service.

My worst computer customer service was with Dell many years ago. Despite having an on-site warranty, the Indian call-centre was obviously trained to do *anything* possible instead of sending someone out to fix it. I cannot imagine how many hours I must have spent on the phone to them, as they got me messing around with both hardware and software... Bring older and wiser I wouldn't tolerate it now. It caused me a huge amount of anxiety and eventually they let me speak to a manager to resolve it.
I have been an Apple user for many years now but was pretty disgusted when my very expensive imac packed in a few days after the warranty expired. The motherboard failed and they told me it was impossible to repair. They simply weren't interested when I suggested that 3 years use from such a machine wasn't really good enough!
Not having used a Pc for so long now, are they still as prone to viruses as they were? That was one of the things that made me jump ship...
