Unsurprisingly the Kelvin amp came with a known issue. It makes a buzzing noise so I may try recapping then substituting components again. If I fail it will be off to Maughans for a full monty service.

Does it have fan cooling around the back like the power amps had?

No, it just relies on the heat sinks. I will take an internal pic tomorrow.
They are nicely built but also a bit unreliable. This one has apparently already had a fix/service and there is a sign of a previously fried resistor on the PCB. It looks like it's already been recapped but I will replace the caps anyway as a starting point, probably using some Kendeils from Les W.
I read another thread where a similar problem was cured by replacing a part on the preamp board. It's a bit of a pain to get to but you will see that from the pic.
I had a Kelvin preamp and monoblocks back in the early 90s and they were very disappointing with a pair of Townshend Glastonburys. I always fancied trying them again with other speakers because they were such cute little things. The integrated was a cheaper and easier way of trying the Kelvin sound and it's equally cute.

The Marantz looks very nice indeed, vaguely reminiscent of the gorgeous Pioneer PD-91 I used to have.

It's a beautifully built heavyweight and it's very capable sonically. It resolves more detail than my CDX and it is pretty dynamic to boot. It's also utterly lovely to use. Nothing seems to make it skip, even moving it whilst playing! The drawer is as smooth and silky as I've come across too. Unfortunately (to me) it's just as incapable of playing music as every other Marantz player I have owned or heard. It's not unbearable to listen to, which is how I'd describe most Marantz players. It's still just about as barren and mechanical as the others though. It's made me feel utterly great about the CDX though. Man, it's good

Interesting you should say that. I had a friend with the first Marantz SACD player, the SA-1. When we compared it with my (admittedly slightly modified) Sony SCD-1, the Sony trounced it for sheer musical enjoyment. That Sony lasted a long time in my system because it made such great music. It must have been the slowest machine known to man, though, taking more than 30s from play to music.

A few bits have whizzed in and out recently without more than a few hours play time. My love of buying and admiring kit often runs into my other obsession: A hatred of clutter.
One bit I have kept coming back to without success has been the Sonneteerr Campion. Whilst I love the aesthetics and ergonomics, the thing just sounded weedy and "polite" with everything I tried.
Today, I have finally managed to get it to let its hair down. Turns out that for some reason it really isn't happy with NVA LS2 speaker cable. So much so that its removal from my system has allowed the Campion to metaphorically grow from a dandelion into a sunflower.
I have found similarly striking differences between speaker cables with certain amps in the past but I'd forgotten just how big a difference they can make with some amps. The Myst Tma3 was very fussy about cables but the Campion appears to top even that. I've gone back to Tulsa Arrow cable as "discovered" by Jerry some years ago now. Changing the speaker cable has made a significantly bigger difference than changing the amps has recently. I realise that statement will be unacceptable to some but that's what I hear.
I haven't tried the Campion with my Spicas yet, but it was previously a total failure with the Snell Js which it now sounds very fine with.

Hehe it was a bargain at a fiver! To be honest I struggle to hear much difference between the technics tuners and British models. They seem really good to me I already had a nice technics but it only has 7 presets. Yours has more although I haven't even fired it up yet.

Bit of a chance purchase has led to these coming here. Intended for use in my 2nd system although my wife absolutely loves Naim amps, so we'll see. This pair is a 62/110 but I have lost count how many Naim pairings I have owned over the years.

The 110 has always been a bit of a favourite of mine. It just has a "rightness" about it. I'm still completely nonplussed by the prices naits fetch when a pairing like this one will give so much more of everything for the same money or less.

An Exposure IV power amp from 1978. It's sat under the TV because it's just a few MM too wide to fit onto the hifi rack.

I've been having such a blast with the CDX/Exposure amps/Snell J I haven't even tried the Naim amps. Whilst you don't hear many people using them together, I have enjoyed several such pairings over the years. Im as happy as I've ever been with my sound and I'm listening more than I think I ever have. It's really killed my enthusiasm for box swapping right now.

Had an interesting week so far. I bought a Naim CD5x on impulse. It's the one Naim player I have tried that didn't do much for me and it's always puzzled me because my experiences differ greatly from others on this one. Anyway. It arrived and first impressions played through Naim amps weren't positive. It was heavy and "thuddy" sounding with a crude and somewhat dulled delivery. However, on switching back to my CDX there wasn't the sort of improvement I'd expected. It wasn't lousy with Naim amps but it wasn't great either. Switching to Exposure amps, both players were suddenly transformed and the 5x benefitted most. Taking the Naim amps out of the equation, the 5x is a fine player and a viable alternative to the CDX. It's a bit fruitier and a little more "flat earth, PRaT etc". The CDX is a bit more open and maybe a tiny bit more electronic but very exciting. I genuinely think I've outgrown Naim amps. It's been coming for a long time but having ran Exposures for a while now, I'm not going back. They are just too limited spatially and tonally. I've always known this but I've been able to tolerate their "bad habits" because I loved the other things they did, I think I'm over them for good now, Cue today and another impulse purchase arrives: A plastic-cased Cyrus Two. When I worked in a hifi shop as a young lad, I always liked this version of the amp but something vital was lost when the metal cased version arrived. I always wanted to try one at home so almost 30 years later, here it is. History doesn't look on the Cyrus Two as kindly as other amps of its generation but I have been genuinely surprised how vital it sounds. I've had a blast with it today and enjoyed every single track I've thrown at it. I won't be kicking my Exposures into touch anytime soon but the Cyrus Two is still a brilliant amp. I've recently had four more current integrateds in my system: the Sugden A21a, the Sonneteer Campion, Puresound A30 and the MVL A2+. The Cyrus is every bit as good as the best of them through Snell Js. It has its own signature, as do they, but it can clearly still hold its own. I'd genuinely expected to have my rose tinted glasses removed and my boyhood memories erased. Not so. It may be a synergy thing but it sounds fresh, direct, clear, sure-footed and fast. It's also been the cheapest entertainment I've had in a long time. The 80s were indeed a great period and one I feel lucky to have experienced as a young guy. The Cyrus Two can now occupy its rightful place in my fondest memories of that era

Naim amps . . . They are just too limited spatially and tonally. Yep, that's pretty much what I've always thought. Never been a Naim fan, never could hear why people raved about them.

I liked my Cyrus 2 from that period. I still own it but it developed faulty inputs so it sits lonely on a shelf in a spare room. I used it with an AR turntable and some Castle Pembrokes when I was a student. That system sounded really great in the massive 30 x 18 x 15 foot living room I had. (I had rather opulent student digs during my first year of college when I rented the wing of a castle!)

I can't quite match a wing of a castle even today! I must have studied the wrong subject I have had another good day so far with the Cyrus. I'm using some lengths of speaker cable kindly lent to me by Chris. I can already say they are potentially as good as anything I've ever used. They remind me of all the good things about LS6 but to me they are a little easier to live with. Now everyone's different and I haven't tried it with other amps, so please treat my words with those caveats in mind. Considering how cheap this stuff is, I think Chris has found a real bargain and I will be buying some based on what I've heard so far. I always like to have a variety of cables in hand for different amp/speaker combinations and this cable sounds so good it's a no-brainier. Even if the cable fares less well with other combinations, I have heard enough to know it can sound gorgeous in the right circumstances. Based on what I've heard so far, I'd say the cable sounds powerful, crystal clear but utterly benign. The thing I really like is the way the music seems to emerge from an utterly silent background. It's this element that reminds me of LS6. It was a strength of that particular cable that I really valued and I haven't found in other cables. I can't afford long lengths of LS6 but I can with this. It even looks pretty!
