Surely you remember the irritating Harry Enfield character who went about telling everyone " You don't wanna do that! You wanna do this instead!" This guy bugs me. He is all that I dislike about hifi forums. The "know-all" whose very existence is devoted to telling other people what they should buy, listen to and prefer......usually when they haven't even asked for an opinion. He haunts and usually "craps on" any thread he feels he has "expertise" in and simply cannot accept that he's the last person anyone wanted to hear the same opinions from yet again. Ironically, he's also the one person we are all sat cringing, waiting for and expecting to post. He's the reason I've given up even reading most forums and also the reason I find myself here. If he's already joined TAS, I'm just thankful he's not an active poster. Maybe he's just decided this isn't the place for him. I live in hope. Harry: if you're reading this, please don't decide to drop in and convert me to your way of thinking. I'd far rather share and learn from open-minded individuals who offer advice only when sought and only comment when they have something both valid and new to say. If anyone out there takes a long hard look in the mirror and sees Harry staring back at them, please consider enriching your life with some other "outlets". Alternately, keep posting and I (and others like me) will do just that. Am I the only one who has become bored with Forum "Harrys"?

They are of course, a fact of forum life. Most places though, have enough other balanced individuals to offset the Harrys of this world. I find it possible to ignore most of what they say and take what I want from the forum and hopefully, be able to make some contribution too.

I used to use the "Ignore" function but then everyone else would either quote or paraphrase their words anyway, so there was no escape It must actually be pretty un-rewarding to be right all the time and know it all. You have nothing left to learn and noting to gain from interaction other than stroking your own ego. I love learning and gaining Insight from other people's experiences.

Its a bit difficult to gain insight from other people if they are wrong

I'm just going to place a mental image of that pic of Harry in my mind and map it onto those who fit the bill every time I encounter them. At least it will make me laugh rather than grit my teeth I just find such people a huge turn-off and I wonder if others do too. Hifi enthusiasts may be a shrinking pool and it would be sad to see it shrink further because a handful of evangelists don't know when to zip it

Unfortunately, all cross sections of people have their 'Harrys'. How many times have you been in a group where someone loves the sound of their own voice and feels the need to express an opinion on absolutely everything? I find such people very tiresome.

As I know I'm right about everything, I can't be bothered arguing with the ignorant or giving them the benefit of my superior knowledge and experience. It's only the semi-ignorant that feel the need to prove what they know

It's the taxi-driver syndrome (well London cabbie). Or in my case the "Osteopath" syndrome. I find it particularly amusing when they inform me of matters in my own field of expertise.

Been thinking
One of the reasons TAS is such a great place is we don't go for attacking anyone or want to see it.
Open minds and ears

Harry's are the bane of my professional life however I do find them amusing on a gloomy Monday morning when the the prototype bards need populating and the intray is over flowing, phone calls are plenty full of audiophile Henry's extolling the virtues of the best sound since the dawn of wax cylinders being an lp12 (circa 1973 never serviced), a old worn out Deccan cartridge, Naim Nait 3 and a pair of Kan's
Never heard a better sound in the history of man, that always cheers me up
Mind you the internet is given birth to various breeds of self import (and promoting) individuals with and without agenda's
I can think of one or two an uber ego, self opinionated, self deluded, self obsessed individuals who's ego orbits the deep reaches of true un waiving self belief of their true greatness and Megalomania. All of which inhabit Internet forums
For some unfathomable reason normally balanced people turn into grade 'A' , 24 carat,120% dickwashes of the finest order sporting a DSC and bar (with clusters) and PhD in being a certified asswhole of epic proportions. It's like they just seem to check their personality in at the keyboard for no other reason than being a professional bell end.
Even guardian readers do not usually process such diametric personality disorders, so what makes a normally well balanced person morph into a macro? Sorry I mean an Harry Enfield character.
Perhaps we should explore this in greater depth, putting on the Freud hat for moment, best pigeon German " now zen, take a couch, lie back and tell me, at what point do you realise you had sexual problems?"
