steven wilson/porcupine tree albums-amazing involving music on vynal, sacd.dvda and now bluray.SW one of the best musicians/engineers around at the moment Thanks for those. Careful with Porcupine, not all of Wilson's albums have good sound quality. For instance, Up the Downstair has some of my all-time favourite songs of theirs, but the sound quality is dire. He remastered the drums, but it's lipstick on a pig. What a great line ( but it's lipstick on a pig )nice one Martin

Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club
I am even more impressed with this as a test album after hearing it sound so different on a variety of different systems recently.
Try track 9 All I Wanna Do. The first thing to strike you is how vivid the hand claps sound at the beginning. Then her voice: it's set back in the mix but isn't buried, it should still be completely intelligible. Then the drums: they're really dynamic and have impact. Through all of this, there is a superb sense of a live and vivid performance going on.
Each song has a different sound (compare the above with track 7 No One Said it Would be Easy), but the overall feeling is one of exciting songs played with zest. If this album sounds dull, that's not at all what I hear.
By the way, it was engineered by Bernie Grundman. 'nuff said.

Here's a fun system test that everyone should try. John Keating's Space Experience came out in the 1970s and was, together with Wendy Carlos, one of the first complete albums created using the Moog and VCS3 synthesisers.
It's creative, if a little crazy, and typical music of the period. More importantly, it's still fantastic to listen to and your tweeters will definitely have a 'WTF' moment as they are driven at levels they've never before known*!
Try this track...
*The LP was known to cause the CD4 circuits of quadraphonic decoders to light up in error, such is the ultrasonic content. I have an original pressing.

Listening to London Grammar last night, I realised that Strong is an exceptional recording for listening into a soundstage. There is a lot going on underneath Hannah's powerful voice and that nice bass line.

I have another one to add which I have used a lot for assessing my system of late. They come as a pair, the studio and the live version, both invaluable for assessing noise floor, soundstage, note decay and dynamics. Are you not able to explain WHY you posted this track and how it would help with system assessment?

- Dream Theater 'Pull me under' track from album Images and Words. Sheer visceral impact of a rock band at 11. Ability of system to portray the excitement and sheer fun of the music. Have you heard the superb new Dream Theater album Jerry? This is a suitably heavyweight system work out. There's a lot going on but there's still lots of air and space in the recording. Visceral is the word. The opening minutes remind me of Rush's instrumental 'XYZ' which can only be a good thing ... This track from the recent Styx album offers a similar experience - a really dense and layered mix but so well recorded it sounds 'monster' on a good system. Drums and tight bass really punch through.

Based on the 1st press LP Dynamics , Scale & Soundstage I found it in 24/96 on Qobuz. It's pretty well made, tidy performance, some interesting effects. I saw Steve Miller back in 1975 at Knebworth.

I think this version of Why Can't We Live Together is the best sounding track I have heard on Spotify thus far ... The sense of space and palpability is just amazing.

I always use level 42 persuit of accidents as a first stop, if the thing you are listening to cant separate all the interwoven bits out into coherence and let you pick and follow any bit you want then it fails the test

Jennifer Warnes - Way Down DeepThis track was made for hi-resolution evaluation, with its subtle percussion and ultra-clear vocals. There's a good soundstage back there that you can hear into. In 24/48 on Qobuz. open.qobuz.com/track/115032748
