Does anyone else messaround with subs? I generally use just one which integrates nicely with the main speakers, but on occasion (when I am bored stiff - like today when I should be out enjoying the sunshine, but find it is too hot and unbearable) that I fire up a second and mess around with placement and phase. It is interesing the changes in presentation and soundstage that can be achieved. Often the track plying sounds very different, sometimes better, somtimes not. The changes cover the whole of the audio spectrum.

Whenever I am asked if I would like a piece of cake I always pose the question "Cake or Death" and they look at me as if I am mad....wel they would be quite right. Eddie Izzard at his best. I also thought his take on supermarket fruit brilliant - especially Pears which is so true. I am not sure if I can attend this year's ASBO, but will PM someone if I can make it.

I never really like the taste of my uncles and aunts ankles. I suspect that no one will be surprised to hear that the cheapest mono boards put together with secondhand parts sound the better of the two IRS amps.

Yes Martin. I only took a punt on them following good feedback on Diyaudio and the fact that I could not get to hear another IRS2092 board that I bought from Sure Electronics as the transformer I bought to power it went open circuit. That has now been replaced by Rapid Elec (great service from them by the way) so I hope to get that going this week.
Class D has certainly come a long was in the last 10 years since the first low powered Tripath amps.

For anyone starting out they need to be aware that they will make mistakes. Sadly there are not the number of shops there were which makes it harder to get to hear stuff. I always had a budget when I went shopping and I stuck to it.
When I was looking to get a "proper" system in the early 80's I avidly read all the mags especially WT..hifi and the Awards issue of course. My expectation bias was high, but I was not dissapointed and kept it for about 5 years. I think I was lucky that it all gelled to my satisfaction and gave me the sound I liked. When I wanted to better it that it became much harder to decide in which direction to go and some purchases were better than others, but none were a complete disaster.
Getting into DIY is in equal measures highly rewarding, frustrating and addictive (at least to me). Take amplifiers for example, you can try Valve, Mosfet, Class D, Class A etc at a fraction of commercial prices. They don't even have to look pretty. It's all about the music!

My sister is 3.5 years older than me and was into Motown. We had a lovely HMV radiogram that I used to "DJ" on at about 8 years old. I had to push it to the windows so that she and her mates could dance to the music in the street. I kid you not that one of the tunes was Martha and the Vandellas....yes that one.
It started a love of music and I got a "system" at about age 11. Complete shite, but it went pretty loud....nearly 11
My son probably had a similar experience as I was always playing music from the day he was born. When he asked for it, he got some of my spare kit(prob 13 or 14)
It's music first and foremost, if you don't have a need for music, you don't need a Hifi.

They think that by doing so they will bully you into driving faster, I just gently slow until they (sometimes) get the message that their tactics are not working.
Is it just me or is there an epidemic of arrogant drivers who either don't signal at all (I am not going to tell you where I going, because I know and you don't need to) or wait until that are actually making their manoeuvre and then signal. Dangerous and infuriating especially at roundabouts, mini ra's even more so.

I used to be a community mediator for the council. We would speak to both parties and see if the "noisers" would be prepared to meet with the aggrieved to see if the matter could be dealt with amicably. If the "noisers" refused to meet then the matter went nowhere. If you are intending to go to EH you will need a log of when these incidents have taken place, the times and how it has affected you. Are there other neighbours that have or are likely to have been affected? If you don't know, it would be worth knocking on a few doors to see if they would be prepared to get involved. Are you attached to the property?
Although it would not give a forensic level of noise, some phone video footage of what is going on could help to show what sort of disturbance is happening.
Your first port of call should be a friendly chat with them.

What about Class F It is said that "class F admits imperfections like the parasitics of the transistor and tries to optimise the global system to have a high impedance at the harmonics" By the way, I haven't got a clue what this means! (sounds like a bit of Chinglish to me)

On similar lines i always wanted to do one of Audiosector Gain clones but never got around to it. Chip AmpIf you haven't heard an LM3886 or LM3875 gainclone it's worth having a listen. For a very simple circuit they are pretty impressive. I understand that Mark Levinson used these chips in a couple of their amps. You don't really need a PCB as there are so few components.

Colin, interesting stuff. I was not aware of the rail droops in Class D. Some designs I have seen incorporate a choke, now I know why. If you are not too busy then your offer of a cct would be great. You may know that I know Alan (too long since I popped over to his!) I have had a lot of Richer Sounds/Cambridge stuff that I thought was very good, but a lot of people are a bit sniffy about it. Have a good Xmas. Rob.

Hi Colin, I am not familiar with a Bass Pump PSU can you explain how this works. I have not experienced any over voltage trip using the linear PS.

The first dem, Meridian I remember very well the stunning active M10s. There was volume available that sliced the top of your head off, cleanly My wife has not been well recently and so I have had a lot of time to surf and came across this old post. I remember going to a show at Heathrow in the 90s and hearing an active Meridian system. They were playing Dangerous - Michael Jackson and the dynamics and bass slam were jaw-dropping. Very impressive, but maybe tiring long-term, and the soundstage was not particularly good, although that could have been the room. And yes...they shouldn't have been afraid to turn it down. I have just remembered that worst dem I ever attended was at the very first What Hifi LIVE event in about 1993. They had a log cabin type thing where they had an Audiolab based system (I remember 4 M Monoblocks) and Monitor Audio floorstanders. They played some so-so music and then decided that "America - What Time is Love - KLF" would perhaps wake people up. If you know this torture track it is probably best played with a duvet over the speakers....however off they went at PA sound levels and after about a minute they cleared the room....Horrendous.

When I wrote my post I was mindful of the skewed logic applied to the definition of respect used by some in society. Here is what the Urban Dictionary says :-
Respect Treating people in a positive manner that acknowledges them for who they are and/or what they are doing. Being treated or treating an individual in a dignified manner. Respect is earned and is never just given. BUT, you must give respect to receive respect. Meaning when you interact with an individual you treat them with dignity and in a respectful manner as this shows your character as a person. And the respect will be reciprocated. You must always behave in a respectful manner as this reflects on you, your character, integrity and values of who you are as a person.
No one owes you respect until you have earned it, so there is no such thing as I will give it after they give it to me first. That attitude is a disrespectful action to anyone you interact with as it insinuates that you do not trust them to act accordingly, and implies that they "owe" you respect before you will give it. That will cause people to LOSE respect for you or never gain it in the first place. When you first meet someone, everyone is given the benefit of the doubt that they are a respectable individual. Questioning their integrity(respect) before you have even met them and "expecting" respect to be given without giving it yourself is insulting and condescending to that person and is judging them in a negative light when you know absolutely nothing about them.

I can recognise an artists talent, but wouldn't you need to know them to have respect for them?
