Ry Cooder and VM Bhatt A meeting by the river The Waterlily label do put a lot of effort into their material. By the River is excellent. Have you tried the HiRes version on HDTracks?

I have a new reference recording: it's I Put a Spell on You from Jeff Beck's Emotion & Commotion. Play this track at a realistic level and you will realise that:
a) Joss Stone really nails it, it's a truly great and emotive performance b) the opening salvo into the early climax should take your head off if your system has sufficient headroom c) it's a recording that can sound harsh when poorly reproduced, but really responds well to clean replay d) it sounds very live for a studio recording, very immediate and with a great soundstage
It's on Spotify, but you need the CD or hi-res track to be able to use it for evaluation.

Don't remember I put a spell on you standing out, but upgrades have made this quality rating nebulous and a moving target. Emotion and Commotion gets a fairly low for Jeff Beck, of 8/10 from me - overall rating that is. Short album too I must become more scientific about my quality ratings. Difficult with the moving target and some previous 10/10 for quality being surpassed to become 11 and 12 out of 10 ........hmmm That Joss Stone is a much older woman, probably black in a young girl's body ! What a lovely smile

Anything on Opus3 - Eric Bibb's releases on this label are straight to stereo performances by the ensemble. No overdubs. If you hear someone standing out whilst playing a solo it's because they either played louder or they stepped up to the microphone. It doesn't get much simpler than that! Also anything on the Windham Hill label. The label is best known for the late Michael Hedges being one of their artists, but there is wider diversity on the label than just one man's work. I'm currently listening to this .... ... and there's no sign of Michael Hedges on it.

Jazz at the Pawnshop is a great recording.
Opus3 recordings are excellent, as are those from Proprius.

This album by Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavalle is astonishing. The production is beautiful, and the contrast of a normally acoustic singer set to stark electronics works really, really well.

Happen to be playing the first self-titled album by Rickie Lee Jones as I came across this thread again. A stunning album, with a wide variety of songs, sung wonderfully and a production to die for. The players are also sublime - the drummers for example, are Jeff Pocaro, Andy Newmark, and Steve Gadd!

James Taylor - Hourglass & October Road are both incredibly well produced and recorded.

Agreed with both the RLJ and Hourglass, both well worth having in your collection.

Alison Krauss & Union Station - New Favorite.
My first encounter with this record was in the Michell room at a show - I think it was Bristol - and John Michell was really excited about having been given a test pressing by Diverse Records, and proceeded to play it. What emerged from the speakers was was sheer artistry and superlative musicianship.
I ordered my copy on vinyl immediately.
