I've just returned from The Last Jedi and I found it to be well written with good acting, great set-pieces and effects, and directed exactly as I expected. It also moved the story along towards an obvious climactic finale. After the appalling episodes I, II & III it's back up there with the best of them and that's all I want from it - 2½ hours of pure escapism.

Glad you enjoyed it Martin, hopefully on a second viewing I'll get more from it as overall I enjoy the Star Wars franchise. Agree about I, II and III too, not a patch on IV, V and VI. My favourite from the last decade is Rogue One, probably due to Gareth Edwards who directed (and pretty much did everything else) one of my all time favourite films MonstersBest film I've seen over the last few weeks is Molly's Game, due for national release in a few days. Written & directed by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and Jessica Chastain is fantastic in the lead role. Highly recommended.

Most things with Aaron Sorkin linked to them are good, so I look forward to seeing that.

Agreed about Rogue One, superb. I loved Monsters, too.

I thought The Last Jedi had some great action sequences but due to how good Rogue One was I came away a bit disappointed as a few scenes like princess Leia flying through space without oxygen I really could do without

Agreed, that was the worst scene. Since when did Leia have Jedi powers anyway?

Believe it or not I thought Monsters 2 was pretty watchable as well. Quite liked it.
Glad to hear that Last Jedi was a worthwhile escape from reality for two hours, since thats all most movies need to be. But some can't even do that.
Will look into Molly's Game.
There's a Danish movie called Pusher which suprised me recently. It's Mads Mikkelsen in way I'd never seen him, as a lowly street thug druggie fresh out of jail, back in the world with him he and trouble finding each other everywhere.
I'm of the opinion that most non-American film I've seen, even non American soap operas. Absolutely slay most American films in depth and story and acting.
Pusher was no different. A low.budget Danish film but I felt more invested in these characters which seemed way more believable to me than anything I've seen in 95% of American films. I can name a good 50 American films that had breathtaking acting and realistic moments, but that's not alot out of the thousands I've seen.

The Hollywood machine wants to appeal to the lowest common denominator, in other words the largely uneducated US population that thinks Transformers is an epic production.
I exaggerate only slightly for effect.

Three of the best films from 2017 slay the majority of Hollywoods dreck (new word, thanks Stratmangler), Raw, Okja and Lady Macbeth. But my prize for the year goes to Blade Runner 2049, totally stunning visually and for Hans Zimmers score, both of which pay great homage to the original. A work of cinematic art and destined to be another timeless classic. I read a great quote in the Guardian re the film, 'You could take any shot and hang it in a museum'Oh, I thought Wonder Woman was a great film too, saw it twice I enjoyed it so much. Justice League however, total bollox and I walked out half way through.

Last Jedi at the cinema last week with sonny-jim - really enjoyed that too...
Here on DVD - Alien Covenant. Not sure what to expect, but rather than the alien creatures affecting me, the interplay between the two 'synthetics' scared me to death. that 'David' character is one nasty mo-fo in my opinion... Reading the novelisation in tandem helped no end.

Two of the films (Blu-rays) I'm looking forward to watching in the new year are The Snowman, based on the book by Jo Nesbo, and The Death of Stalin. The clips I've seen from the latter look great, and as for The Snowman, I just hope they don't bugger up the character of Harry Hole. The books are terrific, the film has a lot to live up to, as does Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

The Snowman, based on the book by Jo Nesbo, and The Death of Stalin. The Death of Stalin is superb, you won't know whether to laugh or cry, hilarious film and you'll totally love it I reckon. I'll be interested to hear what you think of The Snowman too, especially as you've read the book?

The trouble is, I've read all of the Jo Nesbo's books, and I have a very fixed vision of what Harry Hole is like. The movie blurb doesn't exactly mesh with that. p.s. Happy Birthday John
